Frist fears ‘landslide victory’ for Dems
By: Steve Benen on Monday, June 2nd, 2008 at 5:30 AM - PDT

Republicans have been known, from time to time, to use the politics of fear to get ahead. That, of course, includes scaring the bejeezus out of their own rank-and-file supporters, in order to get them to open their checkbooks.

But former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) seems to have laid it on pretty thick in his latest email missive on behalf of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, sent this week. The subject line read, “Democrats Win Landslide Victory.”

I have a real fear of waking up to this headline after the elections this fall. Make no mistake about it: If our grassroots teams fail to come together and work as hard as they did in 2000, 2002 and 2004, that headline could very likely be the result!

There’s so much at risk, and conservatives I talk with from all across the country are feeling the rumblings of “what could be.”

Now, I’m obviously not the target audience of Frist’s message, but if I were a DSCC donor, and Chuck Schumer sent me an email about John McCain doing a great job registering voters, raising money, and rallying legions of supporters, all of which points to a Republican “landslide,” I might feel a little discouraged.

The New Yorker’s Hendrick Hertzberg offered some psychoanalytic observations about the email’s author.

1. Don't worry Sen. Frist
We Democrats have a way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

2. Funny how the rightwing exists and lives solely in fear.
Same thing from the religious right, too. They don't raise money and inspire people to work FOR causes or ideas or ideologies, they raise money and inspire people to work out fear AGAINST other peoples' causes or ideas or ideologies. Many of which ideas, causes, or ideologies don't even exist ("liberal media", "homosexual agenda", and so forth).

They live in fear - fear of immigrants, homosexuals, secular policies, liberals, liberal theology, the words of Jesus, frakking everything.

Which is too bad - I prefer living in hope and optimism and for good things.

3. We can only hope for a landslide
But I am sure the GOP has some fixes planned to insure otherwise.

4. "Congratulations on not mentioning Bush, though. Denial is the first step in the grieving process."
Mentioning Bush should be the DNC's #1 campaign strategy, period. Personally, I have no problem kicking the rats while they are in the gutter already!

5. If the Dems are smart - and they so often aren't - they will kick until the GOP is dead.

Not just into the gutter, but continue that kicking until the rats hit non-existence.

The Dems so often get 'em into the gutter and then feel bad about it, and then leave them alone to live and regroup.

7. If the likes of me can pledge "no guilt" when it comes to these bastards,
then the DNC and especially our surrogates should.

I feel guilt about nearly everything but saving my 11 yo from the likes of these cretins. For that, anything goes.

6. Liar
Do you want lower taxes, less regulation and an economy that empowers small businesses to create new jobs?

Wow, I wonder if any of that really happened in the past 7 years. I know huge corporations got some hefty tax cuts, but alot of small businesses went under. More than in any previous administration, certainly MANY more than under clinton.

LIAR.
