3. I can foresee people saving that car/insurance payment |
|
for a couple of months to buy and insure a tuna wagon that's better on gas, blowing a kiss to the repo man when he arrives to haul the dinosaur off.
The hit to their credit rating will be worth getting out from under that huge monthly bill to pay off, insure, and feed the gas hog.
It just won't be good for the car companies.

4. the math just went that way for me. |

I drive an F250 as my farm/towing/tool truck. For the last two years, it has also been my daily driver, as it seemed silly for a single guy to have two vehicles, with their resulting maintenance schedules, insurance, and registrations.
Well, last month, I finally decided it was time to quit burning so much diesel, and last week I bought a 2001 volvo v40. 30 mpg (and gas instead of diesel), here I come!
Of course, in my case, the 250 is paid off (it's a '96 base model: no bling there), and I will still need it 2-3x per week for the farm work. But it will be nice to leave it parked the other 4-5 days of the week.

6. Unfortunately for me I'm right on the line. |
|
I drive a Mazda B3000 with a V6 that gets about 22 mpg. I figure the best I can get from a used small car is 30 to 32 mpg. So by the time I figure the payment plus insurance I come out just about even in monthly expenses. But if it goes to $6 a gallon I probably won't need to worry about gas because I won't have a job to go to.
