stations were charging $4.25 and $4.29. For this price I should have Chippendale's type attendants in gold speedos checking under my hood, my tires and washing my windows! For this price I demand service!

4. Thank you
It freaks me out when I don't see at least one thread complaining about the price of something that people should avoid using in the first place.

5. It's the death of gas-guzzlers at this point, at least for most middle class and working poor folks.
Only the rich will still be driving gas-guzzlers if this keeps up for an extended period of time.

10. Yeah, but you avoided the SUV craze over there in the UK. You have superior mass transit.
In the US, our passenger rail system is worse than something even a Soviet interior ministry would provide, and don't you tax gas as a luxury item in the UK? I know it's taxed as a luxury in France. In the US, we don't do that.

13. The U.K. can not even hold a candle to the NYC Metro which
...moves more people greater distances over far more physical obstacles taking in all of the five burroughs stretching up into Connecticut, Rhode Island, to the extremes of New Jersey and reaching into the population centers of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. We forget the sheer scale of distances which the U.S. has to traverse when we compare to other countries although when we take in the Channel Tunnel and all of western Europe then we fall way behind on scale and modernization

9. I don't drive gas guzzlers - I drive little four bangers
and I'm still having a hard time affording the gas to get around. It would help, though, if I didn't live in southern California, where everything is very spread out and doing anything requires long distance travel.

12. Yeah, I drive a 4-cylinder as well. US infrastructure was built around cars. It explains sprawl.
Take, for instance, this little beast on the LA Freeway:

Try putting this in downtown Paris or Berlin. They'd positively riot, but this kind of infrastructure is beneficial to American car and oil companies. It's why companies like GM routinely bought up and junked street trolley companies back in the 1940s and 1950s. They wanted to push people onto car dependency even though it meant higher out-of-pocket expenses for individual drivers.

11. Last week I filled my tank for the last time this summer
It was still $3.99. As I rode my bike past the station the next day it was $4.19. Weather permitting, I will be pedaling the 13 mile round trip to work and back until October. This is a habit I picked up in my twenties and it feels even better in my sixties. Maybe it's the feeling of not being ripped off that adds to the enjoyment.

14. My dad used to ride his bike to his place of business during WWII
...1941 to 1945 when gasoline and tires were strictly rationed. Of course we lived close it was perhaps two miles each way for him.
