Cheney Makes Incest Joke About West Virginians- He just gave us WV
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 05:27 PM by Ichingcarpenter
Cheney was at the Press Club to congratulate this year's winners of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency. During a question-and-answer session toward the end of the luncheon, someone asked the vice president about his wife Lynne Cheney's revelation on MSNBC last year that "Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins."

The questioner jokingly asked the vice president if he and Obama were going to have a family reunion, to which Cheney replied he would "have no objections" though he said he doubted Obama would want one - "certainly not before November."

Then came the offensive punch line. Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne's memoir "Blue Skies, No Fences" last year, he learned there were Cheneys on both his father's and his mother's side of the family. There was a Richard Cheney on his mother's side, the vice president said.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

West Virginia politicians aren't laughing at Cheney's little joke, including his fellow Republican, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito

Add West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin's voice to the chorus of outrage from Mountain State politicians over Vice President Dick Cheney's incest joke. Manchin, a Democrat, wants an apology from the veep, ASAP.

"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter," Machin said in a statement. "West Virginia is home to some of the most patriotic people in the nation and our sons and daughters have answered the call to duty every time a president has needed their service. They deserve better from the vice president, and so I would simply ask for his apology."

1. It won't be that easy
He didn't hand us the state. He just pissed some people off. It'll take a lot more than that.

28. BREAKING: Robert Byrd is in the hospital. Not much news but that
he was 'sluggish'. Be well, Mr. Byrd. Live long enough to see and help the Old Republic be restored.

2. Apology?? From Cheney the Dick??? His reaction to their outrage will
probably be: "So?"

Like that unelected evil piece of shit cares one iota about what anyone else thinks.

I wonder how the West Virginia Press and TV will handle this.

Why is he so secretive? The best way to hide his stupidity.

This guy's idea of entertainment is probably watching surveillance cameras from dental clinics.

Edit: to pile on more.

29. It was an inappropriate joke
for an elected official. There *should* be an expectation of greater delicacy for a public servant, especially about regional sensitivities.

Cheney just doesn't care. He assumes that he is above our judgement.

Perhaps he's right.

Rep. Nick Rahall, a 16-term Democratic congressman from West Virginia, was equally as irate. "We may owe the vice president a debt of gratitude for yet another great West Virginia slogan: Dick Cheney is not from here," Rahall told us.

I hate Cheney, but this one is a joke. I would rather the faux outrage be for stuff like his treason, and destruction of this country, or even his ordinary criminal behavior.

Cheney mentioned a pending vacation with his wife, Lynne. The Vice President said, "I asked her where she would like to go for our wedding anniversary. She said she wanted to go somewhere she had never gone before. So I said, 'How about the kitchen?'"

Sexist bastard.

People on DU have said the same thing about WV, and in much less friendly language.

I wish Cheney's words *would* influence the vote, but frankly, most people here will probably look at it as just the usual "joking" we always get, and ignore it.

30. I'm a prole
nobody cares what I say, or who I insult.

We do expect decorum & dignity from an elected official, however, and some respect for their constituencies, at least. What we get from these clowns is bijoux and burlesque.

It isn't going to cause them to lose the GE, but, like Poppy's faux pas of telling an MIA mother to shut up, it certainly will piss folks off.

26. There are too many SMART West Virginians
out there who will roll their eyes and remember that Cheney is just so fucking out of touch with reality that he doesn't think of that comment as a slur.

Let's face it: one of the most, completely patriotic and sharp as a tack even in his 80s Senators, Robert Byrd, is a Democrat. And there are many other congress people who make their home state of West Virginia proud.

When I made my first trip cross-country in 1987, one of the most honest service people who helped me was from WV. I'll never forget that. (And the second one, much later that long week, was a Utah Highway Patrolmen!)

36. No impact, it's an old joke
I think most West Virginians have heard the joke before, and many variations. I don't think their skins are so thin that a joke will outweigh issues when it comes to voting.

If we lose WV, it'll be for a better reason than Cheney's joke.

But we shouldn't lose it.
