Just got back from the store and I am amazed. $65 and all I got were a few things. Coffee, creamer, sweetener, dog food, cat food, bread, ice cream, pot pies and frozen entrees for lunches.
$1.24 for bread ON SALE
$9.00 for a big can of coffee (we drink too much to buy the small cans)
The big bag of dog food I used to pay $7 for is now $9.
Unreal.
How are the working poor surviving?

from grocery shopping. $116 and I don't think it will last the week. I've been trying to go once to one store to save on the gas. I doesn't look to get better soon either/

I would be very happy with $1.24. Maybe you can send me some.
Even Coke and Pepsi have jumped considerably.
Next up: Summer produce.

Not so much now that it is only the two of us. We have one kid living here but he rarely eats here. Not like when he was younger.

6. I am going to have to start using my poor student days tactics again, which |
|
I don't mind doing, I just haven't wanted to invest the extra time.
Things like buying whole chicken on sale and using every single bit of it.
Problem is, when I was eating poor student style, I wasn't eating as much fresh whole food, esp fruit and veg as I do now, which is a great part of why I had gained so much weight.

Skip the coffee. Not much nutrition in that. With it goes the creamer and the sweetener.
Eat the dog and the cat, and save on their food.
Unplug the freezer and frozen entrees become stupid. Onions and potatoes are still good buys. Eat them raw, though, to save on energy.

All those frozen entrees are going up in price. And I noticed, too, that my former $7 bag of dog food (it's cheap but it's the only brand that doesn't make my little doggie sick to her glass stomach) is now $10 or $11, but on sale for $9--yeah, right.

bread and other items, some refrigerated. You can save a lot that way. When I was on unemployment last year, I bought a lot of stuff there to make my checks go further. I still shop there.

18. Well, I try to get stuff on sale... |
|
and stock up. I rarely go food shopping, but drop in on the stores as I happen to pass them and stock up on this week's cheap stuff .
Got two of the big coffee cans for under 7 bucks each not too long ago, and still only halfway through the first. Two usually last me at least until the next sale or I sweat the $11 normal retail.
Cat food I look for sales, but know Target always has a good price on the dry stuff, and BJ's on the canned. Petsmart beats them both, but the nearest one is not near enough.
Bread for a buck and a quarter has to be the spongy store brand white stuff. Can't eat that and make my own for a little over a buck a loaf. Flour won't be on sale again for a while, but I still have some I got for a buck a 5 lb bag a while back. There's a zen thing to baking bread or making your own muffins, pancakes, and stuff from scratch.
Only buy pasta when it's down to 50 cents a pound or less, and make my own sauce from those big cans of tomatoes on sale for 60 cents or so. Just loaded the freezer with chuck steaks at 1.79 a pound and have a shelf full of 16 oz canned veggies at 50 cents a can on sale. Got some 50 cent a pound whole chickens in the freezer, too. (I need a bigger freezer)
Every week somebody has Blue Bunny, Edie's, Breyer's, or Turkey Hill on sale. This week Waldbaum's has ALL of them on sale! (I really, really need a bigger freezer!)
Don't like chuck steak or noname chicken? Well, then keep complaining about the price of strip steak.
Pot pies? Yeah, I can make them, but I draw the line there-- too much of a PITA to make, and I try to only get them when on sale. But I do fall for the temptation at times. Same with frozen pizza.

19. A 50# sack of flour was $14 last fall. It's $26 today. I just paid $13 for a 25# sack of |
|
barley. It was the last sack on the shelf. I expect the next delivery will be at least $22. 25# of red beans was $11 three months ago. Now $18. And it's clear the curve is still around the bend, and has not even reached me yet.

28. Someone found my mother cheaper coffee at Sam's |
|
Pretty sure it was Sam's.
She always gets the 3 pound can of decaf Folgers. At her local grocery store it started out at like $7/can and it has gone up to $12/can. Friends of her's found it for $7 (on sale) and bought her 3 cans so she could stock up on it.
I feel your pain..I don't buy meat or much dinner foods (teen daughter and I are NEVER on the same schedule so I don't make a sit down evening meal).
Usually just get us each some simple on the go breakfast food and then the staples (milk, bread, OJ for her, Crystal Light for me, health and beauty necessities). My bill last night was $115.
I don't see how people are doing it if they do have real dinners or if they are a three-meal-a-day family. I cannot imagine what my bill would be!!!!

over the past year. I got 5 pounds as part of my mother's day gift, i don't even want to know how much it cost. I've cut back on so many other thing but you can have my coffee when you can pry it from my cold dead hands. Touch my coffee and someone's getting hurt.
