As Clinton Campaign Winds Down, a Spouse Remains Wound Up

MILBANK, S.D. — Former President Bill Clinton took the microphone here on Monday and began with a lament that it might be his last day as a campaigner ...

“I want to say also that this may be the last day I’m ever involved in a campaign of this kind,” Mr. Clinton said. “I thought I was out of politics until Hillary decided to run, but it has been one of the greatest honors of my life to be able to go around and campaign for her for president.”

The remark appeared to be just a momentary lapse — it would be the only time Mr. Clinton brought up the possibility of anything ending during a day of campaigning in which he outlined again and again his case for his wife’s lengthy candidacy ...
