You never even mention Bush anymore! |
|
A friend said this to me the other day. And I realized she's right and I know why.
You know how you have that old lecherous uncle who caused a lot of family strife and drama back when he was more in his prime? And who probably did a lot of Bad Things, but because he never really got completely nailed to the floor on them, he just got a well-earned bad reputation because of it? When he was young some family members actually liked him, but over time he's become more and more and more disliked.
And now everyone hopes he doesn't show up to family gatherings and if he does, he's sort of plonked in a corner and roundly ignored. And the now grown nieces and nephews won't let their young children get too close to him. Old Uncle George, the crazy one muttering shit over there in the corner with his one wonky eye.
Everyone in the family is just counting the days until January, when he's due to go to that nursing home to live out the rest of his days. The more honest family members admit they hope they never see or hear from him again. The more polite family members can only manage to make somewhat sympathetic sounding noises when his name is mentioned, which is rare.
That's how Bush is to me now. Like a lecherous old uncle you want to forget you ever knew. The one that, when your grandchildren go through your old family photos and asks "who's this?" of a blurry face you squint and "huh" and end up saying that you're not really sure and turn the page.

1. Turn the page but it's still there |
|
What will you tell the grandchildren when they read that page? Forgetting is not going to happen. It will stain the story of this country forever unless dealt with properly.

2. I was just talking about how I think of him now. |

It's a survival mechanism. If I constantly stayed as pissed off as I REALLY am about him and his cronies, I'd have blown up long before now.
As for my grandchildren, they're going to hear about, at the VERY least:
1. the needless war
2. the Purple Heart band-aids
3. Katrina, Katrina, Katrina
