It's official: Californians will vote on constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage
Setting the stage for a political showdown, the California secretary of state today said an initiative barring gay marriage had enough signatures to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot.

The proposal would amend the state Constitution to define marriage as a union "between a man and a woman" and undo last month's historic California Supreme Court ruling, which found that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation was unconstitutional.

A coalition of religious and conservative activists submitted 1.1 million signatures for the ballot measure. Random sampling by Secretary of State Debra Bowen found that enough legitimate signatures had been collected.

3. Current polls say no, but...
I fear for the worst. (In Wisconsin it was just announced the other day that a judge said the constitutional amendment was fair or somesuch nonsense.)

4. This is what happened in Ohio in 2004
It allowed them to claim the Christan Right voted in record numbers to vote for the amendment. Thus allowing them to cover up the flip-flop in votes for Kerry.

5. Yup.
If there's one thing that California is known for it's our cults.

We had the Pentecostals, the Manson family, the $cientologists, and now we'll get to see how many republicans are out here.

Why do republicans hate California?

6. Yeah, so Californians, if it passes, be ready for everyone to ridicule your state
and call you a bunch of bigoted hicks. Because that's what we all get called now in Ohio. Even those of us who punched the card against it so hard that the chad screamed.
