What's happening in California ?? |
|
A law to outlaw gay-marriage is going to be on the ballot in California? I thought some judges just ruled that gay-marriage was legal in California? What's going on? Is this just a political trick to try and get out the vote in California for the conservatives? Is this issue strong enough to beat Obama in California? Will it carry over to other states that do not have gay-marriage on the ballot? Isn't this the same old trick the GOP uses every year? Will it work again? Or have the people moved beyond this issue?

1. Someone posted here yesterday that the law has a slim to none chance of passing... |

2. We voted on it here before |
|
And I think 2/3's or some odd number were opposed to gay marriage, the court overturned that vote, so now the same people want to put it on the ballot again as a constitutional amendment which would stick and could not be over rule by what they see as activist judges.

7. But what are the political consequences... |
|
Controversial issues can affect votes in every state in the union. Somehow, I feel like we are being manipulated and used for Republican advantage? Am I wrong?

3. Right wing GOTV campaign |

along with the abortion ban in (?)Pennsylvania. The gay marriage ban question did it for them in 2004.
It's not going to pass. They're just trying to pump the vote for the fascists.

4. That's it exactly - put it on the ballot and the loonies come out to vote it in |
|
and while they're at it, they will vote for McCain and other assorted corporate candidates.

5. This new proposition is for a constitutional amendment. |
|
The recent ruling by the California Supreme Court that banning gay marriage violated the California constitution would be overturned by amending the constitution to limit marriages in that state to the one-man one-woman variety.
Once such an amendment was adopted, there could be no basis for the court to rule a gay marriage ban unconstitutional.

8. It Is Really Easy to Get Something on the Ballot in California |
|
Only takes 600,000 signatures. Easy to get in a state this big, if you have the money (which they can get easily from the RNC) to pay people to collect signatures. There are always quite a few propositions in the works, and they play "bait and switch" games with them so people often don't realize which petition they are signing.
You can get anything on the ballot here.

9. my state elected Reagan, Dukemajian, Wilson, et al. |

under the thin veil of liberal progressiveness runs a deep vein of right wing bat-shit craziness. never forget this.
We must all work hard to make sure this current initiative and similar ones that will follow it ( like parental consent for child prevention information) fail.

10. I guess they have to figure out some way to get their voters out? |
|
It seems to work fairly well for them.
