That was a SELF-CRITICISM of one's, or one's organization's, tendency to rigidity, esoteric purism, over emphasis on ideology, and so on. It has instead become twisted to mean criticism of what one doesn't like in another or another's organization.

To further elaborate... the notion of "political correctness" has been around for a long time. Popular usage originated with U.S. lefties as sardonic self-criticism then usurped by conservatives as a backlash against a sort of U.S. of A. in which calling your opponent "bitch" no longer would be considered relevant political discourse.
