The Last Democrat
Who was the last democratic primary candidate that lost in one year and came back to become the Democratic nominee years later?

I know Republicans have done it recently. McCain lost in 2000 and is the nominee in 2008. Reagan lost in 1976 and won in 1980.

1. Humphrey ran against JFK in '60
then got the nomination in '68 but that was an atypical year to say the least.

4. Gore ran in 88, lost, came back in 2000
His run in 88 is usually credited with having gotten him the VP slot in 92.
