1920: The British are in control of Iraq and there is widespread protest of the British occupation during much of this summer of 1920, with "disorders which, except in the principal towns and some quiet areas, upset administration, cost lives, and cut communications (including the new Basra-Baghdad railway) in much of the territory" (Encyclopedia Britannica 1967). Back in November 1917, the British began an occupation of Baghdad, saying: "our armies do not come into your cities and lands as conquerors or enemies, but as liberators" ...
