2 top military staff ousted
Just heard (vaguely) on NPR that a nuclear warhead (or more) made its way overseas somehow.

Sounds like big, bad news!

Last October, three senior officers were relieved of command for their roles in mistakenly allowing a B-52 bomber to fly from North Dakota to Louisiana carrying six cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads.

But wait, there's more. Not only did the nukes mistakenly end up in the missiles, and the missiles mistakenly end up on a plane, but the plane just happened to end up at a military base which specializes in shipping equipment to the Middle East. Hell of a lot of mistakes, no? Fortunately, someone was brave enough to leak the story, who I thank for his or her service. A mistake? Mistake, my

11. Unconscionable
The entire strategic command needs to be cleaned out. One incident is horrific; two indicates a pattern that simply cannot be tolerated when dealing with nuclear weapons. The people in charge are clearly not taking the awesome responsibility seriously if this type of thing can happen.

Apparently 'zero tolerance' is a fine policy for children with asprin, but too strict for our nuclear command.

Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 07:57 PM by hootinholler
Air Force Times June 2, 08

The 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., has failed its much-anticipated defense nuclear surety inspection, according to a Defense Threat Reduction Agency report.

DTRA inspectors gave the wing an “unsatisfactory” grade Sunday after uncovering many crucial mistakes during the weeklong inspection, which began May 17. They attributed the errors primarily to lack of supervision and leadership among security forces.
