The first time he does something that "we" don't like, he'll become our Public Enemy #1; a stealth DLC member; a DINO; a traitor; a Corp-o-crat; and all those other names we have for people who don't deliver exactly what we demand.
It's happened to EVERY Democratic leader since FDR; it happened to FDR, too.
Truman was despised. Only Bush has achieved lower popularity ratings.
Stevenson was ridiculed.
Kennedy was hated for being a "war monger" and an anti-Communist. (Not to mention being a Catholic.)
LBJ was the butt of every southern-cracker gag written by hipsters in the early 1960s.
Bobby Kennedy was anti-drug and too pro-cop for most radical tastes.
Hubert Humphrey was the target of more hate than anyone from that era is willing to admit to.
McGovern was forgotten within weeks of the election in 1972. Weeks.
Carter was ridiculed worse than Stevenson.
Mondale and Dukakis were treated to Carter-like derision.
Bill Clinton has been called a rapist and a murderer for decades ... by Leftists.
For Hillary Clinton, see recent GD-P postings.
Barack Obama will get a longer honeymoon, because no white liberal wants to be the first to throw a political tantrum. But once the first stone is cast, the air will be thick with them.
President Obama had better be prepared to deliver an Iraq withdrawal, health care reform, gay marriage and full integration in the military, an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, detente with Iran, $1.50/gallon gasoline, legalized marijuana, and have George Bush, Dick Cheney, and half of the gang behind bars, all within six months, or he will feel our wrath.
Do you know what we'll say about him? "Barack Obama is the best Republican president we've ever had!" Because that's what we've always said about our Democratic presidents.
Of course, we could always decide to grow up, as a movement, and go for the long-haul approach, instead of trashing our leaders who don't deliver a pony under our Christmas tree.
Still, even crippled and hobbled by the press, the Republicans, and the Left, Barack Obama will still be far better than the best Republican.
And maybe we'll wise up this time.
