I was alive for a bit less than four years of Eisenhower's reign, so I don't really know the sentiment of the time.

I do know, though, that "Ike" was a nickname in wide use and came with the owner's tacit (and possibly expressed) approval; "I Like Ike" is a famous campaign slogan. I believe he was also frequently called that before he was president.

short for Champion. I also call him my candidate. . . anytime he's running for the Presidency.
