(06-09) 21:34 PDT -- Northern California contributions to presidential candidates have surged so much during the current campaign that if it were a state, the area would rank fourth in the nation.
The rise is a reflection of the influence of Silicon Valley and a flood of donations to Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, who has raised a great deal of his campaign money through Internet fundraising and social networking.
A Chronicle analysis of campaign contributions shows that Northern Californians gave a total of nearly $33 million to presidential contenders Obama, and GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, from the beginning of 2007 through the end of April, the last period for which records are available.
If it were a state, Northern California would rank behind only the real state of California (No. 1) and New York (No. 2) and, if it were a state, Southern California (No. 3).
