The lame duck just got a little lamer tonight as Daily Kos is reporting that Dennis Kucinich has introduced Articles of Impeachment against President George Walker Bush. Just a few weeks ago I remember thinking how terrific it would be if the Democrats finally made good on their promise to impeach. Sure enough, there’s Li’l Dennis, with 35 charges against Li’l Bush (Li’l Cheney rules, rar rar rar)!

19. If we dismiss Kucinich, the Constitution goes with him

because between Bill Clinton and George W. Bush we will have left a historical record that says:

Sexual indescretion is of more interest to the American people than a misbegotten, tragically misconducted, and still unfinished war.

Scooter Libby will have had his sentence commuted by one president because he was not convicted of any of the charges he was originally accused of; only perjury during an investigation. Bill Clinton was impeached for exactly the same reason.

And lastly, what you tell the world - and the American citizenry (if they are courageous enough to stomach what this means) is that whether or not a president should be impeached depends on

- timing of the upcoming election cycle
- the proportion of political party affiliation vs. the president's party.
- whether or not the act of wrongdoing really is significant.
(but not the actual truth)

And we are comfortable deluding ourselves that we uphold the ideals of those who founded this country. Kucinich is seen as a joke or a political tool today; in decades to come he will be seen as the only guy on the Titanic who actually admitted there might actually be icebergs in the water.

I'm with Michelle Obama - for the first time in my political awareness, I'm proud of my country, because with this act by Dennis Kucinich, we have finally admitted that collectively we have the courage to look in our own mirror to see if we can prove we're as good as we think we are.

If we are, we have nothing to fear.

If we're not as good as we say we are, we at least had the courage to find out. Right now this excuse that there's not enough time left to impeach is tragically in line with the ex post facto thankfullness that we never had to endure "the long national nightmare" of impeaching Richard Nixon.

I got it now. If our president is guilty of hanky panky and mickey mouse accusations dating back to before his inauguration; we impeach because we get to burn the witch in public without the witch ever having caused any real harm to the country.

But if the president truly has besmirched the country and can be proven to have betrayed his oath of office, we let him go with our gratitude because then we don't have to admit that we elected a crook.

America the Brave, my hat. We don't have the courage to find out if the enemy might be us. Except, of all people, Dennis Kucinich.

Yeah, he must be a nut. Because the alternative is that the rest of us who are dismissing him might be wrong, and it's just easier to dismiss one guy and keep believing the rest of us are fine.

Hey - there's an argument that the President was not elected legitimately - twice - and we didn't really want to know. We're getting pretty good at ignoring the truth. But like Abu Ghraib, there is the implication that we did not try to correct the wrong (why were all those other boots in the pictures at Abu Ghraib not convicted of dereliction of duty for not stopping the abuse? ? ?) we just cut loose those who were acting on orders and skip the guy who gave the orders.

We're guilty of indifference because we have all this freedom we think the rest of the world wishes it had, and we are too scared to use. Why? Well, it because it might make us look bad.

"When considering cruelties committed in the name of a free society, some are guilty, but all are responsible" - Abraham Joshua Heschel.

We may not have held the knife that was used to murder someone, but we stood by and watched and did not intervene when we had the chance. We are not using the tools we were given by our founders we claim we are so proud of.

And if in the end, your argument for not backing Kucinich is because the timing isn't right, shame on you. Ultimately conducting a war that had no true cause to be waged is the most eggregious thing any American president has ever done, and what you're saying to the world is that you'd just rather not know the truth if it hurts your chances at the polls.

I can't do that.
