City To Hold Meetings To Debate Banning Pit Bulls (OH)
Looks like another city is considering a ban....

Lakewood could become one of the newest cities to ban pit bulls.

Councilman Brian Powers said the number of pit bull complaints have gone up.

That's why he said he introduced legislation banning the dogs.

City Council is hosting one of several public meetings Tuesday night to debate the issue.

It begins at 7 p.m. at Lakewood City Hall.

While I see both sides of the debate, I'd have to agree to a ban. When my brother got a new puppy, his wife used to go the "dog park" in Lakewood. She said that the dogs were all well-behaved and made many nice friends through the owners. One day in particular, she took their 3 month old puppy down there to "play." Once done, she leashed him up to leave and someone let their 2 pit bulls through the gate....they immediately went for their puppy "who was still leashed." One grabbed the pup by the throat....bit the hell out of him. The by-standers (including the owner) were beating this dog to make it let go of the pup. They had one hell of a time. It finally did....fortunately there was an animal hospital very close. My SIL was in shock, crying holding this pup and put him in the back seat of their car. As the pup's heart beat....blood spurt out of his neck wound. All in all, after many hours of surgery, the pup made it. She's never gone back to the dog park. However, she did make a complaint with the polic dept. and they said too many pit bull incidents were occuring at the dog park.....and on the city streets including residents. I saw that pup and cannot fathom that happening to a little kid.....

1. It's Sad To Hear This...
It's not the dogs fault... it's the owners. Ban the owners from the cities!!

2. we have a terrible pit bull problem here..and,yes..it's the owners' faults
they keep these dogs in terrible living conditions and encourage violent behavior...and then are surprised when the dog attacks one of their kids.."he wouldn't hurt a fly"...idiots.

6. Oh, I agree with you.
It is big news, and quite worthy of discussion. These just tend to break down really, really fast. It's always unfortunate when the few irresponsible people ruin it for so many others.

9. I know...
Sort of like breastfeeding and any other controversial threads I've seen here.

As you said, it is worthy of discussion. If it gets too bad, I'll just ask for it to be locked. It just shocked me to see what this pit bull did to the pup. Broke my heart.

5. Too bad we can't ban the owners.

There's a house on my walking route where I sometimes see a pit bull inside an iron gated entry way. Sometimes, he's not there and you can hear drunken brawling coming from the inside of the house. Other times, I walk by and the gate is open. It's a mess waiting to happen. :(

7. We foster dogs. The smallest of the 12 we have right now weighs
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 12:25 PM by rateyes
about 5 pounds. The largest is a pit bull. The pit bull is the most GENTLE of all the 12 we have. One of the sweetest animals I've ever seen. Lets the little ones hang all over him. Always coming up to me wanting to play.

It's not the animal. It's the assholes who own them. You can turn a Yorkie into a mean ass animal.

Buttheads.

8. Gah that's a horrible story!
If it's a breed of dog that is especially prone to violence (which as I understand it, it is), then people should no more be allowed to keep it in residential areas than they should be able to have a bear for a pet.

Our dog park has a small dog area and a big dog area. My biggest pet peeve is when morons bring their big dogs into the small dog area. I'm going to start asking them to remove their big dogs. Dogs are dogs and they do fight.
