Another Scandal at Justice
Justice Department Official Awards $500,000 Grant to Golf Group
Former Staffer Tells ABC News Anti-Crime Funds Given to Programs With The "Right" Connections.
By BRIAN ROSS, ANNA SCHECTER, and MURRAY WAAS
June 9, 2008 —

A senior Justice Department official says a $500,000 federal grant to the World Golf Foundation is an appropriate use of money designed to deal with juvenile crime in America.

"We need something really attractive to engage the gangs and the street kids, golf is the hook," said J. Robert Flores, the administrator of the Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

The Justice Department, in a decision by Flores, gave the money to the World Golf Foundation's First Tee program, even though Justice Department staffers had rated the program 47th on a list of 104 applicants. The allegations were first reported earlier this year by the trade journal Youth Today.

"I don't know why people insist on denigrating it, it's a sound program," Flores told ABC News.

3. well, they're either the stupidest people on the planet..
.. or totally disengenuous and just using
the issue of gangs and inner city youths
as an excuse to donate to golf.. which
they all play probably.

This is so insane, a really criminal use
of money and a complete waste.

4. And where are all those howlers that yelled at the top of their lungs about Clinton trying to set
up basketball for inner city youth?

We’ll put more police in public housing, crack down on illegal gun trafficking, and fill vacant apartments where criminals hide out. And we’ll provide more programs like midnight basketball leagues to help our young people say no to gangs and guns and drugs.

President Bill Clinton, April 16, 1994

EPILOGUE: One of Bob Dole’s most-ran campaign ads in 1996 attacked Clinton’s inner-city midnight basketball program initiative, which cost (according to Dole) $76 million. The ads called the program, among other things, “a subtle and sickening appeal to racism.” The midnight basketball program was eventually scrapped.

5. "We need something really attractive to engage the gangs and the street kids, golf is the hook"
I'm sure that those 'gangs and street kids' will enjoy spending time at all of those inner city golf courses, like at...at...well I'm sure there are some, right?

Every time I think I've heard the stupidest thing I've ever heard, some BushCo wise guy says something stupider...remarkable.

7. And how are those inner-city kids going to afford the greens fees?
Golf in this country is only accessible to the well-to-do.
