On McCain's Comparison of Obama to Carter . . .
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 02:58 PM by Krashkopf
In my opinion, Carter will look much better, in historical perspective, than he does in the MSM, today.

1. Carter inherited a economy that was left in shambles by Nixon’s decision to prolong the Viet Nam war for 6 long years (instead of making good on his “secret plan to end the war"). America blamed Carter for not fixing everything in 4 years. (That should be a cautionary tale for Obama and the Dems);

2. Carter was unable to gain the release of the Iranian hostages but only because candidate Reagan cut a “back door deal” with the Ayatollahs in Tehran to hold the hostages until he took office. That, alone, is what probably cost Carter his re-election;

3. Carter did not violate the Constitution, as Reagan did with “Iran-Contra;”

4. Do you really think we would be fighting for $137/barrel oil, today, if the U.S. had remained committed to Carter’s dedication to alternative fuels?

5. Do you really think we would be torturing people in Gitmo, and abu Ghaib, and black site prisons, and torture ships, if the U.S. had remained committed to Carter’s Human Rights policies?

"Four More Years of Jimmy Carter?" Not only YES, but HELL YES!

1. Carter had the moral high ground
but near zero on charisma. Obama, on the other hand has both. Obama is way more popular abroad as well. I still admire Carter.

2. That's how Obama could
counter, first make sure everyone knows the absolute truth as to why Carter had a difficult Presidency and then focus on his Human Rights Policies and other positive attributes and announce that Obama would be proud to be know as having similar accomplishments.

3. I've linked to this Rassmussen poll in another thread, here it is again...
Carter is very popular among Americans today.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/favorables/presidential_favorables

57% rank him favorably.

McCain's use of Carter as an example only illustrates how out of touch and how much a part of the right-wing noise machine he really is.

4. My initial reaction: Is that supposed to be an insult to Obama?
I don't think so..............

5. I would be honored to be compared to Jimmy Carter
If the energy plan that he put in place in the late 70's had not been dismantled by Reagan, we would be energy independent by now.

6. I would heartily *welcome* a second Carter term
I am sure that everyone here would have much preferred a second Carter term to either of the Reagan terms.

Like Mrs Thatcher, who embraced the term "Iron Lady" (which was originally intended as an insult) Obama should embrace this theme, perhaps appearing with Carter a few times. As a poster above pointed out, Carter is now held in great esteem by most Americans and could be a great help to Obama's campaign.

7. McLame is so desperate.

John McCain embraces GW Bush & his failed policies.

The short list

Iraq,

Top end tax cuts

Privatization of Social Security

Unraveling employer based health care,

Cuban embargo.

Illegal Spying on Americans

Busholini Policy of Torture

Veto of new GI Bill

10. The Democratic National Party needs to paste that photo on each and every ad
between now and the election.

8. I would love to see a photo spread all over the wires of Obama and President Carter
having a discussion right there in Plains. Obama consulting with the "elder statesman" right there in the deep south. A beautiful young bi-racial presidential nominee with the white southern gentleman. What a photo that would be...

9. The biggest problem for McLame is that only people in their 40s or older remember Carter.
If you were fifteen years old when Reagan defeated Carter in 1980, you're 43 today. In other words, a huge chunk of the electing public doesn't have the vaguest memory of Carter as president. Instead, he's well-known as a kindly humanitarian that reminds everyone of their nice grandpa or their church's senior pastor.

And among us fogies who actually remember Carter as president....gee, wouldn't it be nice to have $1 a gallon gas again? We thought that was bad! And those Iranian hostages? Weren't they all released unharmed? No war, no body bags, no articles about U.S. paramilitary torturing detainees.

It's another example of how deeply McCain is out of touch with....everything.

12. Kudos to McCain for the comparison ...
... at least because it's getting big play in the media. What a bunch of crap.
