NASCAR racist, sexist: Who could have guessed?
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/racing/06/10/bc.car.nascar.harassment.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

Grant alleged she was referred to as "Nappy Headed Mo" and "Queen Sheba," by co-workers, was often told she worked on "colored people time," and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan.

In addition, Grant said she was subjected to sexual advances from male co-workers, two of whom allegedly exposed themselves to her, and graphic and lewd jokes.

I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

2. Because this only happens in NASCAR right?
Maybe you forgot Isiah Thomas? Maybe you forgot that this happens in all kinds of organizations.

...from a fellow born-and-bred Okie.

I grew up with these people. Don't EVEN start trying to snow me about them.

And you know it just as well as I do, so let's not play games here.

9. How many NASCAR tracks are there in Oklahoma?

How many races have you been to? How many people do you even know that have been to a race? So yes, you're getting snowed on.

15. That is not true.
Most of the drivers come from outside the southeast. There is not a single NASCAR Sprint Cup driver on the circuit from Alabama and only a few from North Carolina. The crew chiefs and pit crew members come from all over the country. Same for the inspectors and other employees.

18. I've moved on from Oklahoma
and I know plenty of Nascar fans who are very liberal. Heck even some of my friends back in OK who are Nascar fans have more than 3 teeth and vote Democratic.

Now did this lady experience discrimination? Most likely but I've got a feeling Nascar will quash that too. There's too much money at stake.

13. No and No... I do not support any cable/satellite co.
And don't act naive. Everyone has seen all the flag waving, GWB loving Nascar people and there are plenty...

I don't think you'll find a lot of AAR or KO rethug fans, do you?

6. What she says is most likely true
I too grew up in southern culture and I've seen this kind of stuff all my life.

NASCAR attracts the rowdy, crude behavior such as what is alleged

Good to see you Sundoggy!

11. I grew up here, too - in the same state as you.
And I've found that LOTS of sports attract the rowdy, crude crowd.

It's not limited to NASCAR.

14. what pigs!
The lawsuit details a series of those alleged incidents:

• Grant was forced to work outside more often than the white male officials because her supervisors believed she couldn't sunburn because she was black.

• While riding in the backseat of her car pool at Talladega Superspeedway, co-workers told her to duck as they passed race fans. "I don't want to start a riot when these fans see a black woman in my car," she claims one official said.

• When packing up a dark garage at Texas Motor Speedway an official told Grant: "Keep smiling and pop your eyes out 'cause we can't see you."

• When she ignored advances from co-workers, Grant was accused of being gay. She also claimed co-workers questioned the sexual orientation of two other female officials.

After her termination, Grant said she went over her notes and recognized "a pattern of retaliation and discrimination."

"It didn't diminish my love for the sport of auto racing, but the job wasn't always the easiest thing to go to every day," she said.

20. Well then, it's obvious
The actions of a handful of the people she worked with are obviously indicative of the prevailing attitudes of the tens of millions of NASCAR fans. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but this line of (supposed) reasoning is ludicrous.

They are all deviants, according to the lawsuit, and so are the sponsors and drivers, just perverts. :eyes:

24. Oh yeah, I forgot about all of them
Where do people get this shit? It's akin to saying "Muslims are terrorists: Who could've guessed?" because of the actions of a few Muslims. I guarantee that if you were to post that as the title of an OP on DU it would be locked within minutes, and the OP might even be banned. There would be dozens of replies telling the OP how you can't judge millions of people based on the actions of a few. However, for some reason this tripe is allowed to stay on here and fester since it's directed at those "stupid rednecks who love NASCAR".

Living in the heart of Nascar country, just about everyone who professes to love that sport that I know has bigoted and sexist attitudes.

Except for a small area in North Carolina, NASCAR is run all over the country, and its drivers and personal are from all over the country, even New Jersey!
