Board signals opposition to mandatory spay neuter

Supervisors made it clear Tuesday they do not plan to enact a mandatory spay-and-neuter law in Kern County.

Pet populations are on the rise again forcing Kern County Animal Control to euthanized more animals after few years of decline.

Supervisors Mike Maggard, Ray Watson, Don Maben and Jon McQuiston all said they don't believe in adding more animal laws.

They didn’t move forward with a lesser option, either, instead supporting a motion by Maggard to delay a decision until August 26 so they can get more information about how to implement the various non-mandatory options for saving animal lives.

“I asked for the report to be brought to us because I wanted to bring this issue to conclusion. It has languished in my opinion,” Maggard said. “That said, I am not going to advocate today that we do mandatory spay neuter.”

not because of "irresponsible" pet owners but because of the economic conditions that we are facing these days, a good part of this home foreclosure, some times pet owners are forced to abandon their pets, most shelters are quite understanding of this fact, apparently not this one however.
