Can't remember where, but probably either in Massachusetts or Connecticut where I grew up and visited many cemeteries. Cemeteries were good places to party in high school. :)

21. Ex-wife AND mistress? How French!
Look at Francois Mitterrand--when they buried him, his wife stood beside his mistress. Apparently screwing around on your spouse is expected and tolerated in Francophone areas.

A few English ones (can't vouch for their authenticity!)

'Here lies Mary, wife of John Ford.
We hope her soul has gone to the Lord,
But if it's for Hell she has changed this life,
She had better be there than be John Ford's wife!'

'Here lie I and my three daughters,
Dead from drinking the Cheltenham waters.
If we had stuck to Epsom salts,
We wouldn't have been in these here vaults!'

'Here lies John Bun.
He was killed by a gun.
His name was not Bun but Wood,
But Wood would not rhyme with gun, but Bun would.'

And it's said that the following premature epitaph was written during his lifetime for the 19th century politician Robert Lowe (known as 'the Illiberal Liberal'; and essentially our first and arguably worst Minister of Education, and responsible for the Payment by Results system - a sort of early and peculiarly nasty version of NCLB):

'Here lie the bones of Robert Lowe.
Where he's gone to, I don't know.
If to the realms of peace and love,
Farewell to happiness above.
If he has sought a lower level,
God have mercy on the Devil!'

On a watchmaker:

Here lies in horizontal position the outside case of Dear George Routleight, watchmaker, whose abilities in that line were an honor to his profession -- integrity was the mainspring, and prudence the regulator of all the actions of his life. Humane, generous, and liberal, his hand never stopped until he had relieved distress. So nicely regulated were all his movements that he never went wrong, except when set agoing by people who did not know his key; even then he was easily set right again. He had the art of disposing his time so well that the hours glided away in one continued round of pleasure and delight, till an unlucky moment put a period to his existence. He departed this life November 14, 1802, aged fifty-seven. Wound up in hopes of being taken in hand by his Maker and being thoroughly cleansed, repaired, and set agoing in the world to come. 30. Small world. My parents used to know Zeezo
He and they all lived in Alaska and all ended up in Denver years later. His Magic Castle in Cinderalla City was my favorite store in the world as a child. I didn't know he'd moved to Colorado Springs.

28. Reminds me of a story I heard
about a fellow who wanted to be buried face-down in the dirt with his bare rump sticking out of the ground - the better that passersby could kiss his ass.

31. I knew a fella that requested he be stood up at his viewing/wake
He never liked anyone to look down on him and he didn't want them looking down on him in his death.

It freaked the hell out of the people who came in to pay their respect, they'd never seen such.
