on trying to quit.......CIGARETTES!!!!!

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/06/obama-admits-sm.html

God, instead of ABC doing a story on how god damned addicting cigarettes are it does a gotcha piece on Obama sneaking a few puffs. What a bunch of shit and no wonder this fucking country is doomed.

48. Actually, here is what Philip Morris's studies on the psychology
of smokers found:

http://tobaccodocuments.org/landman/1000369089-9121.html

To the extent that smokers' personalities and life styles differ from those of nonsmokers, Dunn (1973) has pointed out that smokers are independent, antisocial, active and energetic, extraverted, impulsive, etc., and that they have more accidents, have poorer academic records, are more often male, etc.

The consequence of many of these descriptors for the two groups -- smoking adults and hyperactive children-- immediately suggests that the hyperctives may grow up to become cigarette smokers, and that the principal reason cigarette smokers appear to differ from non-smokers is that the smoking group contains most of the country's formerly hyperactive children, still showing many of the same characteristics they showed in childhood. It is furthermore tempting to suggest that in the past hyperactives adventitiously discovered that the stimulant characteristics of nicotine enables them to control some of their behavioral problems just as Ritalin does for today's children. Whether or not the nicotine suggestion is correct, the possiblity exists of accounting for some of the smoker-nonsmoker differences in terms of a hyperactive subgroup of smokers. Therefore we have been seeking a data source to provide us with a large sample of hyperactives who, at the time of their diagnosis, were too young to be smokers. We would then track these children until they reached smoking age, and compare the proportion of smokers among them with the proportion among a control group.

The issue in teens smoking out of peer pressure isn't that smoking is cool, it's that smokers are cool.

20. Um, no.
Washington didn't even smoke tobacco, much less opium. Were do people get this shit? Washington could knock back the brandy with the best of 'em and had a serious weakness for port that stained his ivory false teeth. But no, not opium and not hemp, either.

After all he separated the male and female plants on his farm. Which you wouldn't do if you were making rope.

51. Actually, yes, you would. Washington was a scientific farmer & constantly experimented with breeds
Washington cross bred and tried to refine better strains in just about every plant he could get his hands on--except for tobacco which he didn't grow except for a few seasons when he really needed the cash (he thought it was bad for the soil & was right). In the case of the hemp plants, given how lucrative a plant it was for rope manufacturing, he did record his efforts at cross breeding male & female plants and stated explicitly in his diary that he wanted to harvest a better rope product.

Besides, smoking pot wasn't illegal or even considered antisocial back then. If Washington ever did it, he'd have no reason to omit it from his records (he was a compulsive diarist). There is simply not a shred of evidence that Washington smoked marijuana.

But thanks for playing.

27. Most people have to "quit" a number of times before really kicking cigarettes
This just proves how perfidiously addictive cigarettes really are.

As for former presidents, they may have smoked but until fairly recently they did not smoke the hyped up products that the cigarette industry sold in modern times. The products they sold were not nearly as addictive, not nearly as chock full of poisonous chemicals.

Here is the part of the article that amazed me:

The release of a scant one-page summary for 21 years of care brought some criticism to the Obama campaign – especially when compared to the thousands of pages of medical records released by McCain. Obama promised reporters that if there are additional health-related questions, his campaign would make that information available. “In terms of additional records, if there are particular things that people have questions about, then we’d be happy to give that information,” he said.

Obama is young and healthy. He has probably always been quite healthy.

McCain's thousands of pages of medical records attest to his bad health, not his openness.

My medical record would not be that long, and I am 65 years old.

My mother's record at the age of 91 would not be anywhere near as long as McCain's.

The thousands of pages mean McCain is not in good health. How can ABC turn this against Obama? I hope Media Matters takes this one on.

Kind of the way I, or any other middle class father looks when we are trying to keep up with a young brood. It is odd that the RW classify Obama as an elitist, yet they then rip on his fashion sense in riding a bike with a baby trailer (geek-chic) in jeans, rather than in European bike racer spandex like W.

I went directly out to the lobby (under guard) and found a cigarette machine, bought a pack of Marlboro's and smoked three of them in a row before we went back into session.

I can easily understand the recente primary season driving someone just trying to quit to sneaking a smoke. His 'body man' carries a supply of Nicorette, maybe he was out that day?

73. Yep, 1971.
Guilty on two charges and not guilty on a whole raft of much more interesting ones. While on active duty in the military I was involved in an organizing effort among active duty military, ran a discharge counseling service that published a newspaper and ran a bookstore. Somebody into obscure Movement history might remember the Chicago Area Military Project (CAMP). The civilian cadre I worked with came out of that group.

One year hard in military slam. I have a Federal felony record from it, but it really makes no difference in my life. The one bummer is that under the Homeland Security rules I can no longer be involved in avalanche hazard reduction work using explosives and artillery. I really loved to shoot that howitzer :-).

I can't imagine how much harder it is to quit @ 46, when the habit is so much deeper ingrained. And to quit when you're under the stress of a presidential campaign--hell, that just might've made me start up again, after being the health-nut I've become in the last 27 years!

But truly: if this is all they have on Obama, then bring it on! He'll keep brushing it off his shoulder, right into the Oval Office in January!
