Storms Leave Thousands Without Power

WORCESTER (WBZ) ― The heat wave is over and the cleanup is underway.

Severe thunderstorms knocked down tree limbs and power lines in several communities
late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. National Grid said 6,000 customers
are still without power, down from a high of 14,000 overnight. The majority are
concentrated in Worcester, Spencer, Barre, and Auburn.

NStar had as many as 7,000 customers lose electricity in Framingham and Natick.
That was down to about 500 Wednesday morning.

At the height of the storm, nearly 20,000 homes and businesses were without power
in New Hampshire. Most have been restored.

Temperatures soared into the 90's Tuesday before the heat wave finally broke when
the storms rolled in.

According to the National Weather Service, there were winds gusts of 68 miles-per-hour
recorded at the Worcester Airport shortly after 11 p.m.

The service recorded 101 degrees at its office in Taunton, tying reports for August days
in 2001 and 2006. It's the earliest 100-degree reading since October 1996, when the
weather service began keeping records at Taunton.

The damage was pretty bad there, I hear, in Worcester. Some streets had ALL the tree's
downed and the streets were/are blocked and some people there in a TV interview said it
sounded "like a freight train" coming through. It got very gusty at my house for a short
time late last night but no damage here or any T-Storms. Just high winds. My lights flickered
a few times but that was it. Today is warm but breezy and just beautiful! No more 110F or humidity!!

Yeah!!

:hi:

1. ooh - thanks for the heads up - I have relatives in Metrowest and should check on them

Last I looked it was fine there so I thought the storms fizzled out in NY. I got lucky - bad storms and power outages in nearby towns but all we got was some wind and blessed rain and now it's nice out.

2. Me too! I have family in Metrowest/Middlesex Cty. I thought the storms were gone too but
then suddenly all my doors started slamming and I heard stuff falling on the floor in a few rooms and the wind "blew through" at a fast speed... it felt good though as I ran around closing windows and doors. I didn't realize how hot I was, even with the AC in one room, until the storm came through. It was wicked hot yesterday... just awful and I think I was dehydrated from it last night and this morning. Glad you're OK and you didn't get any damage. It seems NH may have taken the brunt of the storms but MA wasn't forgotten by Mother Nature either! ;) I'm just glad we didn't really have a tornado. :scared: I hope your relatives are OK today!!

4. Rent it to us!!!! I hope your VT home is OK.... where in MW?
What town? If it's close to me, I could go check. I'm 15 minutes from Natick/Framingham.

I wonder why Vermont hasn't been reported on? I heard about MA and NH! That's odd...
