Democratic women: McCain out of touch, time to support Obama
Women leaders who supported Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign started a full-court press today to define Republican John McCain as damaging to women on economics, abortion and other issues. They urged women to vote for Democrat Barack Obama.

The group started its conference call with reporters just as Gallup released new data showing Obama has moved into a double-digit lead over McCain among women since Clinton made clear last week she would exit the nomination race. The Gallup data is similar to Rasmussen Reports findings we reported on earlier this week.

The Gallup data show Obama with support from 51% of women, compared with 38% for McCain, for the week of Jun 5-9. Ellen Malcolm, head of the Democratic fundraising group Emily's List, said "Democratic base women" are already moving to Obama and the real work will involve outreach to blue-collar women who are swing voters. "They have the power to determine the results of this election," she said.

Malcolm knocked down what she called "the mythology" of talk from the McCain campaign about picking up Clinton's female voters. "I think that idea's a pipe dream. Sen McCain is really out of touch with the lives these women are leading," she said.
