Is in Manhatten, Ks about 60 miles west of Topeka, Kansas. Kansas University (KU) is in Lawrence about 30 miles from Topeka going East. Does anyone know if the tornado was in Manhatten or Lawrence?

:(
My friend's house was destroyed in the F-5 that cruised through Topeka in 1967..(I think it was 67) She was visiting me in Salina, and we watched it on tv..she saw her Mom on TV crying and her house in rubble behind her.. then since the roads were closed and phone lines down, Kathy could not even get hold of her family for a day or so..
Kansas tornadoes can be HUGE..and very destructive.. and the biggest nastiest ones seem to come at night when you cannot even see them coming..
The weather guy said this one bisected Manhattan..
FT. Riley is very close to that area too... i wonder if they got damage too..

I think the town is called Lawrence. I'm not 100% sure, as we email and never send letters/cards/etc.

Its a good thing the reactor is too small and also set up so that nothing could ever happen to it. Even if all the safety and coolant systems were to be taken away, the reactor would "self-poison" and shut down so that nothing could happen.

It's like something I would expect on the news ticker in SimCity:
"Wind erosion lab destroyed by strong winds"
Or some such. :(

My apartment/house was not hurt at all, and all it would have taken is if it was a half mile further south. But several buildings on campus were ruined. The 100 yr old sun dial in the middle of campus. A hardware store and a pretty big sized car dealership, Little Apple Toyota and Honda was completely leveled... Things are not looking too great :-/ Especially since I had secured Little Apple Toyota as a sponsor for the K-State Marching Band that I'm highly involved in.
I really wish I was not back home for the summer at the moment...

Its really rather ironic that this is happening... I'm such a meteorologist at heart, and I was continuously disappointed all this last semester because we only received one small thunderstorm. The rest would all miss us. So I joked about how Manhattan some how repelled all storms...
Now we had a large tornado head straight through Manhattan. I'm sure eating my words

One of my sons was in the Music Department until this year. He is now in KC. I know a lot of the faculty in the Department. Welcome to DU.
Glad you are safe. The video looks pretty bad this morning. I have not heard about the damage close to Denison Road this AM so I am hoping it was not bad, I worry about the Vet schools there. I have spent way too much time over there, they are a good group.

Who is your son? I've been highly active in the Marching Band for the last four years, so I bet I would know him. :-)
And thanks for the welcome!

as you have not hit the mystery minimum to receive them so keep posting and we will talk. He was never in the marching band, he is a jazz percussionist. He did play Tympani in the orchestra several semesters.
I play with Todd Kerstetter (I hope I spelled that right) fairly often, what a great guy and I play with Bruce Gbur, another great guy and Kristen Mortensen...well a lot of them in the Topeka Symphony, the local ballet and whatever else comes along. Just saw Wayne Goins play last weekend at the jazz festival here. You have a great faculty, lots of talent and such nice people too.
Did you go to Australia last year? My son did not but he toured South America as part of a combo.
Post some more so I can send you a PM.
