The Right Kind of People
By Tom Sullivan

June 11th, 2008 - 5:31pm ET

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overheard complaints about planned communities:

“First, you have to submit the plans to the committee ... it's all about who you know.”

“He left the mulch in his driveway for days.”

“So what would they say if I built a fence around my yard or parked an old pickup in my driveway?”

In what’s generally a conservative business, in the most conservative city in a very conservative southern state, the chatter heard over the cubical walls is often enlightening.

Liberal, of course, is a four-letter word. Liberals want to tell you what you can and can’t do, like they know what’s best. Which is why conservatives buy into planned communities with meddlesome homeowner’s associations. They’ll pay serious money for the privilege of having the right kind of people tell them what they can and can’t do.
