and eom means end of message

Both mean that the subject line is all you have to read, because the "message space" is empty.

Just an FYI in case anyone needs to know.

9. I figured as much but...
...I don't participate in many forums and, really, have only seen "K&R" used a lot around here. So I figured folks here would know what it was.

14. It means you want the story promoted
The recommend indicates that you have clicked the little recommend link and K is for kicking the thread to the top of the forum. Every reply kicks the thread up. K&R indicates that you don't have anything to add at this time yet the thread is worthy of rising to the top.
