Gun in woman's purse goes off accidentally inside health department
One grazed as bullets whiz out of woman’s purse at KC Health Department
By CHRISTINE VENDEL
The Kansas City Star
A gun inside a woman’s purse accidentally discharged inside the lobby of the Kansas City Health Department office this morning, grazing another woman in the thigh.

The shooting occurred about 9:25 a.m. on the first floor of the building at 2400 Troost Avenue.

Police said the victim was conducting business at a window along the counter when a second woman approached the window next to her. The second woman set her purse on the counter, causing a gun inside to fire.

A man with the second woman grabbed the purse and ran outside. As he did, the gun went off again. Police don’t know where that round ended up. The second woman also fled.

1. There is an amazing invention called a "holster" that when used properly...
...Very reliably prevents this kind of thing from happening.

You don't just dump a cocked, loaded firearm into a sack full of objects like lipstick and mascara tubes, pens, etc. that can easily actuate the trigger.

:dunce:

7. A holster is not always comfortable or practical, particularly for women.
Putting restrictions on how people can carry guns is an outrageous infringement and is borderline sexist. Not everyone has the same physical characteristics. To mandate this kind of thing is an insult to all who hold the 2nd Amendment dear.

8. There are purses specifically designed for concealed carry
They have nice features like gun pockets (which function as holsters), and wire-reinforced staps to make them harder to steal.

To mandate this kind of thing is an insult to all who hold the 2nd Amendment dear.

Yeah, but I'm not the ditz who had her gun go off accidentally because she stored it improperly in her purse.

3. Why the hell was the safety not on?
That should be a requirement for all gun permit holders.

5. Not all guns have safeties
For example, most revolvers don't. Nor do Glock semiautomatics.

Some kinds of guns are more appropriate for concealed carry than others, but in all cases a gun should be kept in a proper holster, not just dropped into a purse, pocket, fanny pack, etc.

6. All the crap in the purse could have knocked that awry
I always have a mental image of the foo-foo lady outside the mall, asking the carjacker/rapist to hold her compact, cell phone, cigarettes, makeup bag, tissues, keys, and other assorted crap while she rummages for her Lady Smith to shoot him.

My guess from the story is that this was not a person with a CCW permit, more likely a gangsta girlfriend who was holding the gun so the boyfriend wouldn't get caught with it.

4. I also read a story about a four year old girl who shot herself in a Wal-Mart.
She found the gun in a purse left in the cart, while her grandmother, a magistrate was shopping.

9. Carry a gun, YES! Conceal it, NO!
I have no problem with anyone who wants to carry a gun, just put it where I can see it. That way I can decide how far away I want to get.

If concealed carry is allowed, I will never know who is carrying a gun. Stuff like this will happen.

10. Holsters are smart
Throwing a loaded gun in a purse is not.

12. How could a gun go off TWICE while in a purse?
Don't they need to be cocked to be fired?

13. The joys of 'concealed carry'!! You can't even get out of the way since you can't see the gun.
