they had to react and probably were thinking more than the freakin' NY Post about how to report this with some dignity.

9. I seriously doubt they were "scooped" |
|
My guess is that they wanted to handle it more tactfully than JUST being 1st to report.
God forbid his family be allowed to process it. :eyes:

I shouldn't be surprised at some people here being complete asses, but I guess I am anyway. I admire and respect Tim Russert, and I am sorry for his family, and appalled that anyone can joke about it here on the DAY that he died.

14. I think that had to do with getting Brokaw ready... |
|
...the other networks had whoever was on say it.
But NBC had to do it with more sensitivity.

15. Imagine learning that your family member died.. |
|
from a newscast.
I'm betting that NBC waited until the family was notified before making his death public. Which is the decent thing to do.

a beloved colleague dies and the FIRST thing they should worry about is who they'll get scooped by. :eyes:

If you watched David Shuster and Monica Nowotny |
|
they were obviously affected. Neither ever smiled about anything and both seems slightly distracted.
I imagine they were the only two there who could go on camera with any composure.
Those two were very professional through this and before they could let on that they were suffering.

They weren't scooped. One of their friends died. They were more interested in other things and giving him a proper tribute.

23. Scoops are for getting hard news out |
|
This is interesting, and surely of huge consequence to his friends and family, but hard news worthy of getting a "scoop" - No! Geez, I read tons of media bashing on DU, much of it deserved, but this is silly. It's sad, but it isn't news in that it affects almost no one outside his personal circle.

24. Tom Brokaw was in an emotional state when he had to break the news. |
|
You don't get ready for the cameras that quickly when you've just lost a friend and colleague. You don't go on the air immediately before "Big Russ" and other members of the family have been notified. I predict Chris Matthews will be a mess, it was as if Tim was his daddy in a way. Rest in peace Tim, sometimes it was church, sometimes it was you. I'll go to church this weekend and pray for you....
