Every time somebody dies, DU loses it |
|
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 04:21 PM by lynyrd_skynyrd
Remember when Steve Irwin died? Ronald Reagan?
We should have a forum consisting of only four threads: 1) "I am sorry for _____'s family, regardless of my disagreements" 2) "_____ was scum and I'm happy" 3) "EVERYBODY HAPPY ABOUT THIS NEEDS TO BE BANNED!" 4) "EVERYBODY CALLING FOR PEOPLE TO BE BANNED BECAUSE THEY ARE HAPPY ABOUT THIS NEEDS TO BE BANNED!"
Either we have that forum or people need to stop dying.

I like the idea. DU is really clogged right now... I've had to start hiding threads in an effort to see other news.
I've said a few of the above-referenced statements today:)
Time for me to move on... I'll get all morose if I think about it too much... besides, how can the dead truly rest in peace if you can't stop mentioning their names.
GAWD... that sounds harsh. Oh well.

I don't remember any Stever Irwin beautification. |
|
I remember people discussing how their kids got interested in animals watching his show, and how he was an advocate for environmental issues. Nothing more than that. Certainly nothing like the "Steve Irwin deserved to die because he hurt animals" on the other side.

Tim Russert dying is a major shock to everyone I know.
Reagan was evil (and ancient). Irwin lived on the edge so his wasn't a shock. Russert dying is shocking.

Guilt over saying nasty things about him, most likely.
I'm just annoyed that GD: P is besieged with obituaries when it should be reserved for information on the freaking race to the freaking White House. Jeez. And with all the freaking traffic here, hide thread isn't working.
Shit.

21. It's because some get unnecessarily indignant when death occurs. |
|
We have a small army of people who collectively react to death the same way:
"YOU DON'T SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THE DEAD, YOU HEARTLESS BASTARDS!!"
We have a small army of rationalists who collectively react to death the same way:
"A MAN DYING DOESN'T CHANGE WHO HE WAS OR MY OPINION OF HIM."
The problem is the first group is entirely intolerant of any other view than their own. They think there is nothing that trumps "he died today." They react because they identify with the decedent's family, and take offense that anyone, anywhere would speak ill of the dead.
The first group needs to learn to stop having a fit every time someone dies. It's death, and it's part of life. Dying does not change a person's basic history or nature. Those who don't want to read anything but "oh, RIP, big fella" need to stop reading threads that don't agree with their point of view.

Think Princess Diana and the over-the-top reaction to her death. It let's people get the emotions out of the way so they can feel better and move on with their lives.
I also think we all want to be remembered when we die and this our way of hopefully creating the karma that will follow us so we don't die unmourned and forgotten.

linking Steve Irwin to raygun. Although Irwin made some objectionable judgment calls over the course of time, he's a Saint compared to what raygun did.
