Where is Osama Bin Laden? An analysis

By Robert Windrem, NBC News Producer
It isn’t a comforting assessment.

A "Western military analyst" was asked earlier this month about reports that Osama Bin Laden was seen on the slopes of K2, the world’s second highest mountain on the Pakistan-China border, or in the Khost Province of Afghanistan.

His response was stunning in both its honesty and its frustration.

"We don't have a clue where he is or even may be,” the Western analyst said. “We have had NO credible intelligence on OBL since 2001. All the rest is rumor and rubbish either whipped up by the media or churned out in the power corridors of western capitals."

In fact, say U.S. officials, the last time U.S. operatives saw Osama Bin Laden--other than in his own videos--was in the famous Predator video shot in August 2000 where he is seen walking with a security contingent near his compound at Tarnak Farms in eastern Afghanistan. The Predators had not been armed yet.

The last time the U.S. heard Osama Bin Laden was at the battle for Tora Bora, when an NSA operative overhead him giving orders on a frequency not normally monitored and not recorded. There were some initial concerns about the identification but the agency later learned from other sources and materials that indeed that had been him.

But that unfortunately is it.

2. Once again, Osama bin Laden is DEAD.....

Fox News: "Bin Laden Already Dead"

Wednesday, December 26, 2001

Usama bin Laden has died a peaceful death due to an untreated lung complication, the Pakistan Observer reported, citing a Taliban leader who allegedly attended the funeral of the Al Qaeda leader
.

"The Coalition troops are engaged in a mad search operation but they would never be able to fulfill their cherished goal of getting Usama alive or dead," the source said.

Bin Laden, according to the source, was suffering from a serious lung complication and succumbed to the disease in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief.

The Death of bin Ladenism
By AMIR TAHERI
Published: July 11, 2002

Osama bin Laden is dead. The news first came from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the fugitive died in December and was buried in the mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information
. The remnants of Osama's gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to keep Osama's ghost alive or because they have no means of communication.

With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have, remained silent for so long if he were still alive. He always liked to take credit even for things he had nothing to do with. Would he remain silent for nine months and not trumpet his own survival?

Even if he is still in the world, bin Ladenism has left for good. Mr. bin Laden was the public face of a brand of politics that committed suicide in New York and Washington on Sept. 11, 2001, killing thousands of innocent people in the process.

What were the key elements of that politics?

The first was a cynical misinterpretation of Islam that began decades ago with such anti-Western ideologues as Maulana Maudoodi of Pakistan and Sayyid Qutb of Egypt. Although Mr. Maudoodi and Mr. Qutb were not serious thinkers, they could at least offer a coherent ideology based on a narrow reading of Islamic texts. Their ideas about Western barbarism and Muslim revival, distilled down to bin Ladenism, became mere slogans designed to incite zealots to murder.

These stories have NOT been refuted or retracted. I'll keep posting this in every "where's bin Laden" thread that comes up, until someone refutes it, Fox or the NY Times retracts them, or people start understanding it...

PEACE!

5. I hope he's dead...but I think they are keeping him alive for two reasons
1) As a figurehead in a movement without leaders or a static organization -- it is in our interests to keep OBL alive for the sake of tracking and monitoring people that try to work with him. The reality is that we did not know enough about Muslim Rednecks like OBL, and if we killed him a few years ago, there was a possiblity that other groups would form and pursue his primitive and immoral tactics. Starting from scratch tracking a new movement is a worse option than keeping OBL alive, and learning about their methods and plans...

2) That said...if the "honey pot" option above is the strategy, that just makes Republicans and Conservatives even more abhorrent to me personally. The way conservatives and republicans have used OBL as a convenient ideological sheild is absolutely disgusting. For them to say BLATANTLY CONTRADICTORY things like "Leaving Iraq would embolden terrorists...blah blah..." while letting the worlds biggest asshole (or 2nd biggest behind our President) make videotapes and breathe our air sickens me for the future we will have to endure.

What the heck was he doing, mountain climbing?!

Looks like MSM is starting to (slowly) come clean re: Osama is dead, and has been dead for a long time.
