By no means do I wish to appear callous, but is there any other news to report
that's happened today?

I've been without internet and phone the past couple days (fuck you Comcast) - plus knocked out on drugs battling a sinus infection.

I finally get the internet back and all I see and hear about is Tim Russert.

It's a tragedy, that's for sure -- hell, the man is only 6 years older than me.

But can't we get back to what else is happening in the world?

8. You appear to be dependent on human channels, but unwilling t o
accept their failings. Hence, you will always be unsatisfied and frustrated.

Me? I just leave the TV off ...

Sorry about your illness; it would make anyone cranky.

As for the public sharing, I find it community building - nothing wrong w/it here or in the small world of modern media. I'm not sharing it, but only because I've got real world drama.

Feel better soon and condolences to all who feel loss, real or virtual ...

10. I can't help but wonder if the press had covered every GI's death with as much fervor
Would we have gotten past the 4000 death number? I'm sure each dead soldier had family that mourned as much as Russert's. Perhaps even more. But the same *mourners* we are seeing now didn't even TRY to bring us names of the kids dying daily, only numbers. Oh wait - they DID give a name, when it was a former football player. But those other kids who had no claim to *fame* got bupkiss.

And I'm sure I'll be accused of *grave-dancing*, but it's the one thought I had as I flipped through channels and saw nothing but blurbs about a political pundit.

25. Tornado did some damage to our roof/destroyed our garage & damaged our vehicles
and threw a bunch of our trees around. The floods blocked all the roadway to/from our house so we were stranded for two days (but so were all our neighbors so we worked together to help others out). We had our roof replaced this weekend but the gutters were to be put on this week - soooo the heavy rain is now in our basement (NOTHING compared to what is happening around the state).

We're safe and dry - so cannot complain - if you haven't checked out the Iowa Forum for updates go over to www.essentialestrogen.com for some amazing video and pics of Cedar Rapids!

83 of Iowa's 99 counties have been declared disaster areas. It's like time has frozen and we all don't know what to do next. Holding our breath - closing our eyes - hoping that when we open them it will all be over. And yet it continues. x(

17. UFW is endorsing Obama tomorrow
Just caught this in my email. I could give you the blow by blow, literally, on Jerry Springer. I seriously never watch it but I'm too lazy to change the channel and I don't want to watch Timmy anymore either.

On Saturday, the United Farm Workers, its executive board and worker leadership from throughout the United States will throw their support behind Sen. Barack Obama in his quest to be the country's next president.

Obama will accept the endorsement from the UFW during a noon call with the union.

The Monterey County call will take place at the UFW office at 437 E. Alisal St. in Salinas.

"Throughout his career, beginning as a community organizer to his present position as senator, Barack Obama has shared the values of the United Farm Workers," said UFW President Arturo Rodriguez.

'Sen. Obama stands firm in his conviction for comprehensive immigration reform. He has been a strong supporter of the UFW-sponsored AgJOBS – legislation that would help stabilize our nation's agricultural workforce. As president, he will continue to hold fast to his convictions by signing comprehensive immigration reform, increasing the minimum wage and making sure every American has affordable and quality health care.'

The UFW, founded in 1962 by Cesar E. Chavez and Dolores Huerta, is the first successful farm labor union in the history of the United States. Throughout its 40 years, the UFW has worked to organize farm workers, raise wages and improve working conditions for its members and all farm workers.

29. Really, check out this thread on the Iraqi pact. It is very interesting
because Bush called them "sovereign" even thoughhe couldn't define it, and said we'd leave Iraq when the Iraqis asked us to go.

They are asking us to go.

37. Yeah, I think it's going a bit overboard now. But the thing is, this was so sudden.
I think what you see is the NBC news team and others going through the grief process. They are actually taking comfort from each other and the stories about Tim everyone is sharing.

It's the suddenness that's causing this extended grief response. If it was something they had expected or if Tim had been battling a long illness, I think we would have seen a retrospective or something of that nature and then it would have been back to the news.
