Teen tied to tree overnight dies
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 09:46 PM by Liberal_in_LA
I'm calculating the amount of time this boy was tied up.. from Wednesday night (say 9pm) to Thursday 4:30pm. That's 19 hours with no food, water, or anyone checking on him? What the hell?

http://www.gantdaily.com/news/35/ARTICLE/22859/2008-06-13.html

The youngster was tied to a tree Tuesday night for disobedience, authorities reportedly said Friday. The teen was released Wednesday morning, then tied to the tree again Wednesday night.

Temperatures climbed into the 90s on Thursday and when his step-mother checked on him at about 4:30 p.m. she found him lying on the ground unresponsive.

Teen tied to tree overnight dies

Posted: Today at 10:09 a.m.
Updated: Today at 7:14 p.m.

Macclesfield, N.C. — A 13-year-old boy who was tied to a tree two nights this week died Thursday, and his father and stepmother have been charged with murder, authorities said Friday.

Brice Brian McMillan, 41, and Sandra Elizabeth McMillan, 36, both of 1110 Felton Farm Road in Macclesfield, have been charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. They were being held Friday in the Edgecombe County Detention Center without bond.

The father said he untied the boy Wednesday morning and allowed him back into the house, but he was tied to the tree a second time that night when he started acting up again. The boy remained tied up until his stepmother found him unconscious at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.

2. Simple punishment: Tie THEM to a tree.
I read stuff like this and I have to go grab a cat to hold or put on some calming music or I swear I'm gonna blow a valve. :grr:

3. They are homeschoolers. Perhaps if this kid was enrolled in public school authorities would have
noticed the abuse

8. I hope your post isn't an indictment
of homeschooling - there are many sane and reasonable homeschooling families out there. These people are CRAZY which is a completely different issue don't you think?

11. the piont being made is, the isolation of a child in private tutelage/homeschooling
allows abuse to go undetected.

And a kid acting up sounds like a socialization problem, common among homeschooled/tutored children.

It's not just homeschooling, socialization is also a problem for kids who are privately tutored because they're acting or doing some other artistic/athletic work.

you DO realize kids act up in public schools, right?

you're pulling a bit of a Dr. Frist here.

19. if the OP doesn't indite homeschooling
then I will.

Allowing parents to pull their children out of a system that allows for supervision of their children for third parties is an open invitation to abusive, sadistic parents to torture and kill their children and get away with it

And I don't care how many home school trolls I offend

A person disagreeing with you about homeschooling doesn't make them a "troll".

28. I think if you check my other posts you will find them rather
un-troll like. What about folks in public schools that are deteriorating - but are unable to move elsewhere? So yes, although my children are in public school - homeschooling can be a legitimate choice. What we need are left leaning homeschooling curriculums.

school you attended sure didn't do its job since you can't even spell "indict" correctly. And you sure learned to paint with a broad brush there, too, didn't you?

but they never left us that long. Right in the front yard next to the street. It was humiliating. That was most likely the point.

20. Over a couple of days...
goes past humiliation.

My Dad got tied up by his grandmother when he was 4, but that was after he had run off from the yard and almost got hit by a train. He remembers it plain as day, and how mad she was. He never left her yard after that.

9. They'll get food and water tied to their "tree."
If there is any decency in them at all, they will suffer worse from their own internal torments than anything the penal system can inflict on them, though.

RIP, kid. You never got a chance.

I don't know whether to be in awe or sorrow.

I do know that I hate fucking ignorant oppression. Some people DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to be parents.

30. Stupid people.
That's not how you discipline children. Also, sometimes bad behavior can be another problem. Sometimes one should take them to a doctor to rule out any illnesses or psychological problems first.

33. I am reminded of a local case
where the parents of a young girl decided to make her walk back and forth on the porch for hours. When she said she was thirsty, they gave her hot sauce to drink. She died.

I can't believe the justification some people will use for their own sadistic tendecies.

35. Sounds like Ursula, and the avenging of her death.
JUSTICE, TALK RADIO-STYLE
Monday, Oct. 21, 1996 By JAMES COLLINS Article ToolsPrintEmailReprintsSphereAddThisRSSYahoo! Buzz The Russ & Bo Show, a talk-radio program broadcast in the evening over WTKS-FM in Orlando, Florida, usually concerns itself with "women and beer," as one of the hosts, Russ Rollins, puts it. But on Sept. 25, the show addressed the subject of child abuse, commemorating the death exactly 14 years earlier of Ursula Sunshine Assaid. When she was five years old, Ursula was tortured and killed by her mother's boyfriend, Donald McDougall. The murder still causes bitterness in Orlando, and on the anniversary, the Russ & Bo Show devoted five hours to it. Between phone calls, Rollins graphically described the suffering Ursula endured. Building to an emotional peak at 8:50, the time of her death, he then called for a moment of silence. As Rollins told TIME, "Dead air on a radio program is strong."

One of the people listening that night was Arba Earl Barr, 33, an inmate at the Avon Park Correctional Institution, the same prison in which McDougall was incarcerated. Barr was serving a 114-year sentence on assault and robbery charges. On Oct. 1, say police, Barr, McDougall and 200 other inmates were in the prison yard after dinner, when Barr took the steel post used in a game of horseshoes and beat McDougall to death with it.
