GOP to go the way of the Federalists or the Whigs?
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 10:17 PM by johnnyrocket
Great rant on the GOP's demise!

Like this:

Many of the looniest of the regressive right will insist that their problem was that they simply weren’t conservative enough! The rest of us here in the reality-based world should cross every finger, toe and any other bodily appendage we can, in the hopes that these folks win the fratricidal war inside the party. Yeah, man, that’s what America wants! Not less of the thirteenth century, but more! More war! More bankruptcy! More lies! More recession! More deficits! More economic predation! More environmental destruction! More trashing of the national reputation! More Constitution shredding! More democracy debasing! More corruption! More sexism, racism, xenophobia and homophobia! More polarization and rancor in our politics! More imperial presidency accountable to no one! More drowned cities! More incompetence! More Bushes! (Yo, Jeb – what up, dude?) Of course! What could Republicans ever have been thinking? The problem with conservatives is that they didn’t realize until too late that America is actually more conservative than Bush, Scalia, DeLay and the rest.

and this concise definition of the GOP:

This party is today nothing whatsoever other than a vehicle for corporate predation.

1. Oh god, don't say that!
I'll never forget all the talk in early 92 about the Democrats going the way of the Whigs. Clinton trailed Bush and Perot and was avoiding the media, who only asked loaded questions about draft dodging and womanizing.

DON'T JINX US! WAIT UNTIL WE WIN! Then let's laugh.

2. No. They'll be back.
Two terms of Obama and then it's Jeb Bush's turn. Never underestimate the apathy, gullibility and ignorance of the American citizen. Chimp and his cabal are going to walk away scott free, the people will forget the horror of their administration, they'll say stupid shit like "it's time for something different" after the endless non-scandal scandals they will lay on Obama and then the neos come back because no one will ever put them in jail and put an end to them.

4. Don't forget those earlier parties morphed into the GOP
Now that the GOP brand has been ruined by one more of their wretchedly bad leaders pushing their wretchedly bad ideas, they'll likely morph into something else, hoping to fool people that the bankrupt conservatism they've pushed on us since the liberals went out of power in 1969 will attract buyers under a new name.

My guess is that the Libertarians are going to see (relatively) stunning success at the polls this year. I have a sneaking suspicion Old Man McCain might just come in third.

Conservatives never actually go away. They just get pushed out of power when things get desperately bad, only to return as soon as all the people who remember why things got that bad have died off.

5. I expect a change in name only. Literally -- they've trashed the brand, but
it's easy enough to pick a new name for the old boss.

6. I can think of two scenarios:
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 12:54 AM by anonymous171
Scenario 1: After suffering major losses in the house and senate, the two camps (the ones that say that the GOP is too liberal, the others that say it's too conservative) split into RLC and RNC groups. The RLC (like our DLC) will promote center-right conservatism. The RNC will continue pumping out racist women-hating xenophobes.

Scenario 2:
Ron Paul succeeds in elected a couple of libertarian repugs into congress. The GOP notices and changes its platform to appeal to Libertarian/Libertarian leaning independents in addition to the usual racist/misogynists/xenophobes.
