Paradise evacuated
"As you might have heard, we have a very serious fire situation here in Paradise, CA. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated from the lower third of the town. Fortunately for us, we live in the area furthest away from the fire and are quite likely going to be just fine, but the situation really makes us appreciate the hard work and dedication of our firefighters. Without them, a bad situation would be much, much worse."

"We'll be keeping a close eye on the fire status, and are ready to leave if we need to. Thanks for all of the kind words and positive thoughts."

9. In my case, they actually did
My Grandfather worked a small gold mine in Paradise in the early teens. I always wanted to visit the site to check it out but I never knew exactly where it was until I stumbled upon the location of the 'secret' gold mine in Grandpa's diary. He wrote that the Bluebird mine was in the SW corner of the SW quadrant of the township. I found the X markings (shovel and pick?) for a mine on a topo map exactly where he said it was. Cool beans! I'm thinking with the price of gold today, I'm gonna be RICH!! The road map was a little less promising; I discovered, to my horror, my secret gold mine was right slab-dab in the middle of a busted down trailer park! My dreams were dashed.

12. Buy the trailer park and start digging!
I'm sure you could find a few private investors. Good luck.

13. Might be easier to rent
Just park my tool shed in one of the stalls and start digging. Maybe I could hire the resident methheads to help with the drilling and explosives, too.

6. Last I heard, the winds were blowing to the north
Did enough burn that the shift in winds does not threaten the main part of town?

10. My Imperiled Home Town
Although I live in Chicago now, I grew up in Paradise. Both my Dad's (where I grew up) and my sister's houses were threatened by this fire. Amazingly, my sister's house was saved - even though the fire burned the vines off a fence only 30 feet from her house! She is incredibly lucky. My Dad's house (which backs up to a canyon) is still endangered, but I think they've got things under control now that the winds have died down.

For a couple of days, I thought that my whole past was going to go up in flames!

14. Those firefighters are heroes.
I got to know them in Idaho as they often camped in our campground when fighting nearby forest fires. They don't get the compensation and recognition they deserve.

17. No, Not That One
It's the Paradise near Chico, California. Northern California, in the Sierra Nevada Foothills.

I found out that my sister's house wasn't saved by the CDF after all. It was saved by her neighbor and his team of volunteer firefighters who defied evacuation orders and stayed to beat back the flames. Amazing!
