How many people may have been tortured or killed along with Family over his Plame lies, and selling of the Iraq debaucle? While I feel very sorry for folks that actually KNEW him and are suffering, I have no more or less Respect for him. His Election prognostications were spot on, but with Rove Faxing you the game plan its not hard to report, just don't give enough away to appear disloyal or fuck up the GOP takeover and you'll do fine..

Some of these folks talk like he's a goddamn STATESMAN, and I'm waiting for the Riderless cart to head to Congress with a flyover by the Blue Angels next.. For Christsakes, he was a Talking Head, period, not anywhere Near a Journalist.. Chronkite, now HE was a Journalist, Bill Moyers.. I'll be sad to see them go, as they contribute opinions of value, not regurgitated Right Wing Propaganda..

Worst of all, we're being treated to a National Media Wake, and I'm hearing personal stories that are More than I care to Know about this guy.. The Media Blown Hair weirdos are NOW the fucking Story anymore... Just REPORT the News and shut the hell UP, could you? :)

As for Concern Vultures here, if i wanted to say last week that Russert was the physical embodiement of my childhood idea of what a Troll under a Bridge would look like, and I feel the same way This Week, well, then at least I'm Honest..

Just because someone Dies who you or I have never met and probably never Would have met, and just because their pixels graced a TV screen I'm supposed to ACT like they were someone in my Family?

It is an Illusion, all well miss is a bad program that hurts Poor people, and to his death I say "So What?"

Except for the fact that when Any Human dies, we are All Diminished.. As they say..

But again, I would say.."Not by Much, Really.. Not THIS Guy.."

I'm sorry for his Family, that's about it..

Now.. How about some freakin' NEWS for the Living, eh? :)

32. Speaking of news dumps, Brian Williams (in Afghanistan) never said a word...
about the more than 1500 prisoners who were liberated over there, today in Kandahar. Not. One. Word.

Guns blazing, trucks blowing up, prison walls crumbling, but nary a peep out of NBC's "on the scene" news anchor.

Meanwhile, a major portion of the midwest is suffering the deluge of the century...500 year flood in some places...hundreds of counties declared states of emergency in half a dozen states. Nary a word.

48. Way.
I tuned in for William's report, knowing that he's been over there all week, and expecting to at least hear some mention of today's major Afghani story. Of course, I also expected him to be sad and stunned about Russert's death and had no illusions that it wouldn't be the lead story or take up most of the thirty minutes, but for them to completely leave out that raid on the prison...left me stunned.

I'd already had a bet going that they would make no mention of the Midwest disaster...MSM just does not care when little people lose their entire lives.

and foolishly thought that since Williams was actually in Afghanistan, he might at least mention the attack, the many deaths, or possibly the hundreds of "suspected insurgents" that were set loose.

My bad.

72. You know, that's a GREAT Idea..
Genius, seriously.. These Media Clowns are ALL about Image, and with an Election coming up, along with a Real Human Being running for once, maybe in these days of 70's Revival we can actually create and fan the flames of a Meme that these bastards Don't Care about anyone But Their Own - Russert being a case in Point.

If Many Websites kept pointing out that these Newscasters simply have NO Empathy for what's going on with Dead Soldiers and Iraqi children, then with enough of a drumbeat (and I've seen it work, hell, I've made the bastards DO things before with Takebackthemedia.com smacking them around) WE can Force them to Re-Humanize, if for no other reason than to Collect our Dollars!

I'm serious, this can cut them to the Bone, AND get some Results, maybe help some kids, get Real, Actual Human Interest stories back on the Page..

Need to create Action Alerts, pick a few Blowhaired Blowhards and single them out for the, "You don't really CARE About the Troops/Iraqi children/starving,evicted,foreclosed families, DO You?"

It always about how the Poor Banks just won't make it, watch them, its goddamn True!

A good idea, how to get the blogosphere to "Lockstep" a little.. If we could, and i had a major plan for it five years ago, we could, as a Force, OWN these Media asses..

If I could just get a "cat herding" Budget, we could kick their asses, folks :)

Some here might remember when our site Ruled, long before anyone was doing Political Ads on the Web, WE were there.. Man, those were the days.. Sheesh, sounding like McCain now :)

But it IS a worthwhile idea you've got there, No one wants to admit they have neither a sense of Humor, or lack of Empathy.. Its even pathological Here if you pay attention :)

Thanks!

86. You are missing the point
Of course he was human, and his family and friends have a right to grieve him.

People are pissed because of the media attention given to his death - it just seems disproportionate, given other important events.

Tim Russert 'seemed' to be one of the good guys to me (IMHO) - a good guy caught up in mega-power and politics who lost himself, and by hook or crook, ended up cheerleading for some truly terrible people and events. I choose to remember him by trying to understand how easy it must be to go astray in the face of our evil and corrupt administration.

I hope his family, friends, and fans have their chance to remember him in their own way. But personally, I'd like these young men to get just as much attention in the news:

06/13/08 DoD Identifies Army Casualty
Sgt. John D. Aragon, 22, of Antioch, Calif., died June 12 in Kadamiyah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team...

06/13/08 DoD Identifies Army Casualty
Sgt. Steve A. McCoy, 23, of Moultrie, Ga., died June 10 at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, of wounds suffered on March 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

118. so is Dick Cheney...
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 11:36 PM by progdonkey
who went almost exclusively on Russert's show, because he knew he could "control the message" there--the message being "we will shred the Constitution and murder hundreds of thousands for our pleasure."

Will you cry when Cheney dies? Why should we cry so much for Russert? I don't begrudge the people at NBC for being grief-stricken, since they knew him personally, but maybe if they (and Russert himself) had shown this much attention to each of the soldiers and civilians who have been killed or maimed in this war, fewer people would've been (and still be) allowed to die in this war.

But should I or the world-at-large mourn? No. I feel worse when I see roadkill on the side of the road--those animals didn't help murder tens of thousands of people because asking for a little evidence of pre-war claims would be impolite.

Well said on all counts.

Dying does not change WHO or WHAT a person has been in life. I never dogged Russert when he alive, but I never lauded him, either. He was often too soft on the Bush administration. Smiling and chuckling in the face of evasive responses to his questions was not a good tactic for finding truth.

He seemed to want to be liked more than he wanted to require answers.

27. Indeed, those addicted to indignation and outrage have a feeding frenzy.
Every event such as this produces an immediate divide between the thinkers and the emoters. The emoters instantly attack the thinkers for thinking, instead of emoting. Notice the language they use is filled with shame, rage, disdain, insults and such. They reenact their childhood training from whoever it was that taught them to shame and berate others as a coping strategy.

Meanwhile, the thinkers are dissecting the corpse and commenting on it.

In the end, the thinkers do some good. The emoters? Never.

It's good for the judgmental moralists too.

"Notice the language they use is filled with shame, rage, disdain, insults and such. They reenact their childhood training from whoever it was that taught them to shame and berate others as a coping strategy."

That's it, right there.

I was in the way of some re-enacted childhood traumas yesterday all because I mentioned some inconvenient truths & expressed some negative opinions about a public figure.

Pathological rage is an ugly, ugly thing. As is the cloak of moral superiority some put on.

Needless to say there are some real nuts out there just waiting for an opportunity to go berserk.

Anyway, good post. Good diagnosis.

45. After reading quite a few posts I would have to say you nailed it...
some feel that if your not mourning this man as you would your own family member that your somehow not fit to call yourself a dem. Its nice to see symbolman, a long time duer who has earned his respect ten fold tell say what he really feels instead of pretending otherwise as I believe many to have done.

For his family and close friends I am sure it is a sad time but the fact is he was many times an accomplish to the war machine now in play, an apologist if you will and for that, he lost my respect quite some time ago.

I too feel for those that cared for him but I can't pretend that I am in mourning for someone I really did not know other than what he showed to me on meet the press etc..

He crossed the line too many times as far as losing his journalistic fairness in many interviews and I for one cannot canonize someone that I honestly did not respect all that much, I have no doubt that the family and friends of lost soldiers and those of Iraqis feel more for their own lost loved ones as they should.

The man was no saint as no human being is and I agree there is more pressing news worthy stories that should be told which continue to be ignored by the media and that not only saddens me way more but it sickens me in many ways as the way continues unabated and the American people just keep finding themselves further and further down the rabbit hole, he was not helping all that much and I for one though shocked when I heard it considering his age will not lose sleep and I don't feel that makes me a horrible person, just honest...he disappointed me way to many times with his interviewing those that deserved more hard hitting journalistic questions which demanded something other than allowed spin to pass for truth.

I will give him a bit of credit though, it did appear sometimes as if he himself was not exactly happy with having to allow such to pass unchallenged but the fact is he did it anyway...

88. And don't forget to say in the same breath
"You are grave dancing, you disgusting creature, YOU are the one who is not human", because you know that totally shows the person scolding others as superior and compassionate. Gotta love the dehumanizing of someone to ther face in the interests of showing how much better you are from those awful grave-dancers :D.

There is some real irony in those posts.

this morning. Deification, canonization!!!!!! While I feel for his family and close friends, what's going on on GEM$NBC this morning is almost comical. Never have I seen such an unbridled display of media arrogance. They have decided that they should turn their celebrity host's death into a national event. This speaks volumes about their priorities and the way in which they decide what is news.

I'm sick & tired of this celebutante worship. Fuck these tupperwared, botoxed, primped plastic people spewing RNC blast faxes on the teevee. Yeah, I get it, it's sad, he died. But he was an elitist with a fantasy life; he had first-class health care, a team of doctors, a mansion in Nantucket, hob-nobed/worshiped the most powerful and corrupt douchebags in the U.S., and he made millions of dollars each year for spinning corporate propaganda/being a douche. Is the world worse off without him? Hardly. Is it better? Arguably. I'm sick of the sanctimonious mofos acting like he was the best thing since penicillin, and that his death is such a huge tragedy. I feel a lot worse about our troops and the innocent Iraqis who died violent, truly tragic deaths today than about multimillionaire Tim Russert skating out on a massive coronary! Sheesh!

57. He was a wonderful person. He contributed a lot to the world. What have YOU done that compares?
My, what a high horse some people can get on, when they can click away on a computer anonymously.

He asked Cheney tough questions. Not tough enough, maybe. And Russert was not a "gotcha" interviewer. But he asked the questions I wanted to hear answers to. What YOU don't like is that he let Cheney answer. I didn't like that, either. But that's what impartial TV journalism is all about.

We got some of the best quotes by Cheney (unfavorable) from Meet the Press. That was no accident. That was because Russert ASKED THE RIGHT QUESTION TO ELICIT THE RESPONSE.

He was a self-made man, from a blue collar family. And he never forgot his sanitation worker dad or where he came from, even though he became very famous and very wealthy. He wasn't perfect. But he was certainly one of the most informed and interesting political journalists in the media. And Time doesn't name just ANYONE as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world.

59. "Memo to Tim Russert: Dick Cheney thinks he controls you."

In Ex-Aide's Testimony, A Spin Through VP's PR

By Dana Milbank (Wahington Post)

Memo to Tim Russert: Dick Cheney thinks he controls you.

This delicious morsel about the "Meet the Press" host and the vice president was part of the extensive dish Cathie Martin served up yesterday when the former Cheney communications director took the stand in the perjury trial of former Cheney chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

Flashed on the courtroom computer screens were her notes from 2004 about how Cheney could respond to allegations that the Bush administration had played fast and loose with evidence of Iraq's nuclear ambitions. Option 1: "MTP-VP," she wrote, then listed the pros and cons of a vice presidential appearance on the Sunday show. Under "pro," she wrote: "control message."

"I suggested we put the vice president on 'Meet the Press,' which was a tactic we often used," Martin testified. "It's our best format."

128. Then Russert (a Democrat) was pretty sly, wasn't he? "We'll be greeted as liberators," was the
infamous response that Russert elicited from Cheney on Meet the Press.

When you grow up, you'll see that doing your job, being civil and polite to others while doing it, but still doing your job, is an honorable thing.

A journalist's job is not to protest, anger people, stomp your feet, or play "gotcha." That sort of thing is called "yellow journalism" and can be found in The National Enquirer. Russert dealt in facts and believed in civility and politeness. His job was about information. Not taking a position either way.

A fine man. One of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to Time. The world is worse off with him gone, but better that he was here.

One thing Russert never did: Criticize anyone after he died. He was, after all, a fine man.

62. Thanks for keeping it real
this 17 hour nonstop deification of Russert on GEM$NBC is mind blowing. They are taking the opportunity to to divert attention from Scotty's (and others) public criticism of their role in the lead up to the war.

M$M has decided that the news for the past 17 hours is about themselves...and of course ratings. Ah well - no need for further proof that the so called public airwaves are about the private interests of corporate M$M. David Gregory just said it's a national memorial because they can use this opportunity to remember Tim. They are doing this because they can.

This must be a painful time for Russert's family and friends but this is way over the top. It is now beyond vulgar arrogance.

Its just that simple, he aint no Paul Revere shouting that the "British are Coming!"

Tom Brokaw almost choking up on tv yesterday made me think back to the night of the election in 2006 when Brokaw found out that Montana had voted Tester into the Senate instead of re-electing Burns.

Brokaw proclaimed on election night 2006 - right on tv - "there's something wrong here", as if he just couldn't believe that they hadn't fixed the election in Montana enough to keep the Senate in Republican hands.

Brokaw and Russert were good buddies all right, they supported Bush and the Iraq War right up to today.

And I agree with your debate scenario.. Funny how he'd get all up in Dem faces, but when Repigs presented ass, he'd have a bib strapped on..

This whole Media gig is wearing thin, Maddow and KO nailed it the other day while discussing McCain and his glad handling by the Media.. It works like this, in order to be "balanced" and "fair" - and people are falling for this at this very moment, the Media presents "both" sides of the issue.. When something Nefarious happens and its a Right Winger they'll travel lightly over the Evil intention, and toss in how much "worse it Could have been" to satisfy the "balanced" reporting..

"While it MAY be true that Senator McCain was caught in a Closet with a goat dressed in black leather, and engaged in a sexual act, we know for a Fact that Everyone does it now and then, and according to the War Heroe's Medical Records he has plentiful and full strength erections, known to be hard as Penitentary Steel, and with few, little, or No STDs.."

"in the interest of fairness and Balance we regret to inform True Americans that Obama is a known Public Masticator - in fact he performs the act more than twice a Day, AND in Front of his Own Children!"

Hope you like it straight up:

The man in your avatar was a war criminal whose callous disregard for a prisoner, resulting in his death, helped sparked a war that killed over a million people worldwide.

This country was founded by greedy, manipulative plutocrats and smugglers who showed their devotion to freedom by owning other human beings and their opus is now only worth a shit because of 200 years of tweaking the Constitution away from its nastier traits. Ultimately this country has wound up exactly where it would have if they hadn't lived at all, in fact it might've been better off considering the progresses Canada has made from its origins.

That's unsafe truth. That's taboo shit. Not pretending like punching a dead man is helpful or brave.

THAT is how the man should be remembered.

96. I agree with all that, except for one statement
"When Any Human dies, we are All Diminished".

Dying is a natural part of the life cycle. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive as a society to improve health, stave off death, and prenvent war, to preserve meaningful life when we can. But I don't see how we are diminished whenever anyone dies. In fact, many believe that it is the shortness of life that gives it so much meaning while we are alive.

98. I couldn't agree more.
I have sympathy for the man's family. That's it. Russert, despite all the media hand-wringing, was the embodiment of everything wrong with modern American journalism. He dwelled incessantly on meaningless stories and minutia when talking to political candidates, rather than discussing anything of substance. Let's also not forget he continued the long-standing MSM tradition of going much harder after Democrats than Republicans, asking Democrats insulting questions, assuming sterotypes about Democrats are true when asking questions, while at the same time vociferously protecting any conservative stooge who wrapped himself in the flag. His is not a loss for us to mourn.

Russert was and will be a disgusting creature. A sick parasite sucking on the hide of the murderous ancient elephant we have for a vice-pres.
An easy death does not alter the facts: HE IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE SCUM!

122. They Became the News
Brilliant post symbolman. Russert should be held in high esteem by the MSM--since his death allowed them all to become the news. Now they can freely turn the camera on themselves and marvel at how they haven't aged a day since 1984.

125. This one is just beautiful in its own strange way..
its hard to comment on Hitler as they were So Vile in their ways, but I'm just as "guilty" of calling these killer klowns, murderous thugs Nazis as well :)

Drudge stuck up my "Bush is Not a Nazi, so Stop Saying That!" when I was one of the Finalists in MoveOn's "Bush in 30 Seconds", but it backfired on him, he thought I was some other guy :)

Anyway, I'm trying to say this is a great job, I dunno how/where you got that McCain head, but baby it Works- especially the killer font..

Continue cracking everyone up, some pretty severe buttplug yanking's been going on :)

126. Welcome Tutonic!
Thanks, you've raised a major point as well, its not just money or power, its fucking Vanity on top of it - but honestly they have to promote Russert as a human, a political mashine, genius, etc.. Because physically this guy is challenged in every dimension.. I suspect his weight killed him, lack of exercise, too many bacon/cheese/meat product sandwiches in the BarcaLounger or behind the news desk..

Enjoy the DU, there are all types here, a tapestry with a few frayed edges, some loose threads, and loose cannons :)

wing hack who asked all the hard questions of the dems, and sucked up to the right, even to show bush his button which russert wore under his lapel... Makes it hard to be unbiased when you are a bush supporter....
