Only 154 threads?? C'mon, DU, you can do better than that!!
Let's have every DUer start a new thread (or MORE) to put their own unique, awesome perspective regarding the premature death of a corporate media whore - or sainted champion of a Free (Corporate) Press - on display for all to see! Let's get a REAL netgasm going! Switch hands if you must! C'mon DU ... we can do it!! Every brainfart deserves its own thread!

Have been away from DU since Friday morning. Anything happen since then?

Also, if I were to create a new thread similar to the one here but without the word "Russert", then would it be counted?

16. LOL!
It is. But since Viva got me watching, my reading pile has become nice and thick and diverse. Every weekend there is some requisite number of fake books by NeoCon related interests but also, presentations on the voyage of the Beagle, on the "race beat", on election fraud and reform, on lives of statemen -- like The Master of the Senate / LBJ or a retrospective on RFK'S run. BookTv is where I learned about the round ups after 9//1, about contemporary slavery in Florida, and about that perfect expression of BushCo, Black Water.

but I look around me and I see
it isn't so
some people wanna fill the board with silly Russert threads
What's wrong with that?
I'd like to know
because here I go
again ..."

Maybe this one would work better

"There were shills on the air
but I never heard them flinging
no I never heard them at all
'till there was Tim

and there were white lies
and there was corporate spin - they tell me
and sweet doctored intelligence
of weapons
en masse

there were lies all around
but I never gave them credence
no I never bought them at all
till!
there!
was!
Tim!!"

But that really gives him too much credit.

Plus death has enough of a sting, without adding bad parody on top of it.

30. (grin) Once upon a time, I qualified for padded cell status.
I'd be lost in Nerdvana and coworkers would toss pizza and cola in at me when it looked like I needed it. It wasn't unusual for me to do 24-hours or 36-hours straight. Getting lost in a virtual surreality of bits and bytes was, at one time, my 'Matrix.' There's something I miss about that ... being so completely consumed in concentration and keeping all the mental "balls in the air" while building a new construct in that universe was enthralling. Until I get into it, I never knew how much a person could actually concentrate on a complex problem. In school, I was a pretty lazy student - it all came pretty easy - so I'd not learned how to realy study and get deeply into a subject. Computer systems programming was a mental Disneyland - portable and all the rides were free.

Nerd? Ubetcha. :silly:

36. Well, for sure it's a label that fits the "mental space" I'd get into.
I think many systems programmers understand what I mean. It seems nearly impossible to explain to "linear thinkers." I'd guess only about 1/3rd of us thought that way. The only times I discovered that it was 'different' were, first, when Gerry Weinberg wrote his books about "systems thinking" and, then, when Hofstadter wrote "Godel, Escher, Bach." Until then, I really didn't much realize that there was a "modality" ... it just seemed like a mental 'playground.' I have to credit that practice/experience with being able to understand meditation (first TM then other forms) and get so much from it.

I agree with what you say ... with no small degree of disgust. The "state of the art" has gotten appalling - fat, clumsy, buggy, inefficient, and largely ineffective software seems to be the rule these days. The hardware horspower and capacity seems almost completely consumed by the crap - like dragging dozens of sandbags behind a Ferrari with flat tires.

52. Sometimes, I have a hard time concentrating,
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 07:28 AM by ForeignSpectator
"I let the first ball drop as soon as I toss the second in the air". Had my times of "being consumed in concentration" and loved when I managed to be in that "state of flow". Then I had a period of maybe two years of "mental laziness" and I keep thinking 'that never happened to me back then', for example when I forget how sentence started by the time I read its end.
Trying to get back to my "mental fitness" since recently...

Do you maybe have some effective tips of yours on how you train concentration/short term memory??

54. I wish I knew.
I've always loved puzzles, mysteries, riddles, and such. Since I enjoyed it, I was exercising concentration as a side-effect of just being fascinated. These days, when I find that I'm easily distracted and absent-minded, I meditate and let myself discover what's depressing/haunting/preoccupying me ... and "let it go". It's a process - calm reflection in the "here" and "now." But I haven't been in Nerdvana for over 10 years. It's a Memory Lane thing, now.

55. Thanks! Read about the meditation and "letting it go" somewhere on the net, too.
So far, I do with simple concentration exercises I found and after the first few times they already helped. That's how down I was/am. It seems to be like training your physical stamina. If you do nothing, your muscles become weak ( or you get dumb, as in my case :silly: ).

As I ask among friends, I don't seem to be the only one with this problem, though, kinda like a disease of today's times.

Did you have that "going to Nerdvana" under control, meaning you could "go there" anytime you wanted? Or was a matter of luck/right circumstance for it to work?

PS : "K&R" for your OP btw!

71. OK, grasshopper ... here's the 'secret' I discovered
When I became a programmer, I was enthralled. It was a mental activity that could be all-consuming. I found myself getting tapped on the shoulder at the end of the day and told it was past quitting time - and it amazed me how much time had passed. This was a repeated experience for years.

I, of course, did the usual thing and gave the ACTIVITY the credit. IT was what 'made' me concentrate.

We do this ... us human beans. We externalize. She 'makes' me happy. That thing 'gives me' pleasure.

We fail to take responsibility for our choices ... even, sometimes, the 'good' choices.

"School is boring." (Well, don't we yet know it's NOT the school doing that?)

So, once I accepted the fact that *I* was doing it - *I* was concentrating - *I* was choosing to be fascinated - I accepted the fact that I could make such a choice ANY time.

That's the key, I think, to a LOT of life. If we realize how we can shape and choose our own experiences - how we CREATE our own realities - we get the keys to the Toy Store.

Enjoy. :hi:

Oh... and I also discovered I wasn't the first to 'discover' this - not by a long shot. Nonetheless, I take credit for it. Some things have to be 'discovered' by each person. It seems to be a birthright.

45. 214! WOOT! Hey Mr. Twisted Nerd Guy, a question.
oh great nerd who has figured out how to count threads on a topic -- I know about the buddy list (but I'm not really sure how to use it) and the ignore list. What I'd like to make up is a personal "Ignorant list" for my own use, maybe divided into categories such as Ignorant, Willfully Ignorant and Freeakin' Stubbornly Willfully Ignorant (I, WI & FSWI). 'Cuz, boy-howdy, are people revealing their critical thinking skills (or lack thereof) and their "Ignorance level" this past day or so, and it might be useful for future reference. People who write well and/or are part of the Reality Based Community have gone into the Buddy List. Don't want to put all the I's on ignore, since they might make an interesting anthropological study or something, and can be amusing to read in measured doses. :-) My computer skills aren't great, but I'm educable.

Okay, maybe I'm an asshole. Flame away. But the level/frequency of ignorance has been gobsmackingly high, and it's put my brain on the fritz   So many have been assimilated.

On the bright side, quite a few very thoughtful, informed DUers, many of whom have patiently tried to educate others, have been revealed to me. Cheers to them!! :toast: And may the ranks of the Reality Based Community grow. :toast:

Can't wait for the next DUzys. We could all use some good laughs.
