Poll question: Which news story was the most important for the week?
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 01:09 PM by ColbertWatcher
Please vote for the most important news story of the week.

I am going off my faulty memory, so I know I missed several.

21. They're right and you should add it.
You can replace one of the zeroes. Or Space Shuttle. Or tomatoes. Or Russert, except I know you're probably trying to make a point about that.

Supreme Court ruling - Gitmo prisoners have habeas corpus rights...
Pulled us back from the brink.
Scalia was pissed and wrote a scathing rebuttal...so you just KNOW it had to be good for us.
If Jonathan Turley like the ruling...so do I.

4. A year from now the forcing of Democratic values on the EU by the brave Irish wins out.
The Micks
By R. Flynn

Have you ever met the Micks me lads, when wandering round the town,
They are the crowd of Irishmen, whose fame is renown.
There's Alexander, Mungo Park and Michael Vernon too,
But these names I state to you me lads, are merely just a few.

Now once you join the Irish Guards, then you're a Mick for life,
They'll stand by you, through thick and thin, through every kind of strife.
And should you ever be in a fight, with your back against the door,
Just holler 'UP THE MICKS' me lads, for that's their call for war.

They've been in many battles, and you'll find they always win,
For you'll never meet a Mick me lads, who says 'Well I'll give in'
They'll do or die, they're trained that way, they think the life is grand,
And heaven help old England, if they all came to Ireland.

Each one of you went through the mill, your life was made real hard,
But every single one of you, became an Irish Guard.
Those days are gone 'tis sad to say, but memories fondly cling,
And the Devil who chased the most of you, was known as Pokey Flynn.

The pride he took in his uniform, they still speak of today,
And if your cap peak was a fraction out, my god, there was hell to pay,
I'll make a Mick of you me lad, or die in the attempt,
There's many often wished he would, tho' it really was not meant.

As time goes by, old Micks pass on, but their names are ne'er forgot,
For they helped to rewrite history, tho' it may not be a lot,
And as Peter greets them at the gates, with a smile upon his lips,
The Angels all in chorus sing welcome 'UP THE MICKS'

And thanks for the great song.

But THIS week, it's number two.

And a hundred years from now, all who stood up against the Bush Regime will be better remembered than the Irish EU vote.

get very far with Lee Jones: "It's too late for Impeachment." "What has happened is Congress's fault too" (so by implication what are we going to do about impeaching them). "After the GE, the responsibility for defending against precedents set by this administration belongs to the people" (no mention of HOW the people are going to make their voices heard over the voice of $$$$$$$$$$$$$).

:-(

I will try with him again - IF I ever get another chance.

25. The vast majority of Americans know all about Europe
Including that Ireland (and England and Wales and Scotland) are included in the concept.

I know hating on Americans is popular here but let's not turn a quirk into bigotry.

28. All about?
Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 01:50 PM by JackRiddler
I lived in Germany for 15 years, and I hang out mostly with educated people, and including them and everyone else I deal with in the US, I couldn't really say "all about." But most have a decent idea.

Meanwhile, maybe that poll's fixed, but the claim just yesterday was that only 19 percent could find Iraq on a map...

Anyway, I'm an American and you shouldn't confuse humor with bigotry.

32. Lots of Americans are bigoted against Americans
I see it all the time. It's sad but the idealistic, romantic notions that some left-wing Americans have about Europe blinds them to the realities.

Iraq is not in Europe. And a substantial number of UK teenagers didn't know that Mexico was part of North America.

10. Midwest flooding and Government's non-response
all those stories are important but the impact on our country from all the unprecedented Midwest floods will directly affect us. Not only that, it should be a huge political issue - FEMA's lack of timely response ala Katrina needs all the attention we can give it.

Somehow we've got to awaken all those Republican voters to these ineffective govt. entities who are the result of their votes.
And, another reason to end the war in Iraq. With all the catastrophic disasters taking place in our country now, we need ALL our National Guard here at home to respond and I mean WE NEED THEM NOW!

The import of a news story often comes to light afterwards.
Bush's Abramoff connection may become a really big story,
especially if we are ever going to see what Jacks says!!

"35 Articles of Impeachment" is a non story. It's a story that gets people without a clue excited. Impeachment is not supported by the party leadership, the House, or the Democratic Nominee. It's DOA. If you're looking for the most important story it's either the weather in Iowa (life and death) or the GITMO story.

A number of people here need to get a clue.

31. Actually...
...the reason why I created this poll (and the other, more better poll) was to get everyone's mind off the HEADLINE! and on any other story.

You know how the GOP-controlled media works: we get one story beaten into our heads until every last talking point is exhausted and every camera angle is deconstructed.

This was just my way of saying we might be allowing the GOP-controlled media lead us around by the nose when we all know better.

BTW, I disagree that impeachment is not an important story.

Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 01:57 PM by Fighting Irish
I live in the soggy midwest, and the weather's been a real mess (although this weekend looks gorgeous - 80 and sunny! :D ).

This may have long-term effects, if crops were damaged.

All in all, this is way bigger than the impeachment thing, since Kucinich trots that out every year.

Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 06:25 AM by Bluzmann57
and I freely admit it. But since I live in a city which is directly affected by flooding, not to mention work right next to the mighty Mississippi, I had to vote for the floods. The articles of impeachment will go nowhere, Russert's death was a sad thing, the tomatoes are easily avoided, and so on. But as someone said, "You ain't seen nothin' yet" when it comes to food prices and energy prices. A lot of coal and food is shipped via the Mississippi River and it is closed. Some rail lines have also shut down because of this miserable flooding. So since I am directly involved, I vote for flooding as no. 1. Maybe the no. 1 story of the year so far.
edited for lousy typing.
