Poll question: Do you respond to right wing smear emails?
My dad is a conservative not just by choice but by personality and sends me all those unsourced or inaccurately sourced emails they send around.

I respond to about one out of twenty.

Usually, the most I'll get my dad to admit is ''both parties are crooks'' and say he's not going to vote anymore.

I got the one about Obama's racist quotes from his book, and sent two responses, one with the debunking from http://my.barackobama.com/page/invite/therealquote">Obama's anti-smear page.

and the other was more persona as follows:

From the right wing email:
From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

Replace "Muslims" with "Jews" and think of Nazi Germany, and you have the correct interpretation of this passage.

Growing up, I can remember a couple of people who got this email saying far more blatantly racist things than anything Obama has ever said, and yet I don't doubt that you deal fairly with black people you do business with, have as employees, or students.

Obama is a few years older than me, so there is no doubt he heard equally ugly things from his white relatives who raised him. He is also old enough that his life overlaps the tail end of Jim Crow when blacks still didn't have the right to vote in the South.

Even if those passages on race had the ominous interpretation you mentioned, helping middle and lower class blacks would end up helping white people of similar economic circumstances.

In case you haven't noticed, Bush's solidarity with white folks has only extended to those of similar economic background.

Did he fight the energy traders to keep them from blackmailing California out of billions and turning out our lights?

Did he fight a bankruptcy bill that made it harder for consumers (but not big businesses) to file but did nothing to credit card companies and health insurance companies that help caused the problem?

When the subprime mortgage crisis caused an epidemic of foreclosures, did he help people who lost their houses or the Wall Street scammer Bear Sterns that helped engineer the crisis?

If he had succeeded in privatizing Social Security, do you think you'd be getting a check or that the money would end up in the same off-shore account where the savings & loan scandal money went, the Enron money went, and the bailout of scammers like Bear Sterns will end up?

Did you get more tax cuts or more service cuts like crowded classrooms for your K-12 kids and less financial aid for your college kids?

Is he fighting to get oil prices down to help you, or making token protests while his friends at Exxon and Chevron rake in record profits at our expense?

To Bush and people at the top of the Republican Party, you are white only until you vote for them and turn your attention to other things, and then he takes care of his own kind.

As he said in a dinner with top contributors:

"This is an impressive crowd, the haves and have mores. Some people call you the elite; I call you my base."

http://youtube.com/watch?v=mn4daYJzyls">on Youtube

And because of all the things I listed above, he has made it more unlikely that you will be at that dinner of the haves and have mores.

To assume that John McCain will do any different when he has voted with Bush and his backers most of the time would be like dropping the soap in prison a second time, bending over to pick it up, and wondering the next day why your ass hurts again.

1. If..
... they send me one...they get at least one in return.

I usually don't send them unsolicited.

2. I respond to the ones from my dad because I don't want him hearing only one side. He raised a
bunch of liberals (and we like him, this isn't rebellion) so that tells me what his values actually are. He just runs with a bad crowd of geezers who get their information from Faux.

20. send them a Coulter or Goebbels quiz
If you strip the historical context clues, it's very easy to tell them apart. One is subtle and the other is Ann Coulter.

6. I Thought It Was The Japanese
When Obama said
'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

I thought it was about how we interred the Japanese during WWII

Edited on Sat Jun-14-08 01:51 PM by xxqqqzme
stream in '04 so I'm expecting a flood this time. I opened my email on June 3 and there was an Obama slamming email attributing to him what some blogger in Arizona wrote. I have asked her where she gets such crap - did she sign up for o'lielly or limpballs blast list? Did she send money to swifty liars?

Her hatemails usually sends me to snopes and I reply w/ the link to snopes and the ever present request that she cease the rong wing, bigotry crap.

I sent her the link to the Obama stop the smear site so she can check out the lies before she automatically forwards them. I am under no grand illusion that she will fact check anything though. It is going to be a loooonnngggg 5 months.

12. I respond to all of them.
I'm sick of these bastards and their lying. I debunk the lies and send it "reply all". People have to know that these emails are all a part of a larger propaganda machine. The lies get perpetuated enough that lame reporters ask about it and the lie makes it into the news cycle. I don't want to be compliant with this bullshit any longer. It's bad for our country.

14. I reply to the sender with a link debunking their claims
and then tell them if they ever send something to me again without verifying its contents, I'll refuse further emails from them. That usually works.

I don't know anyone who would send them to me. All the Republicans I know are either sick of Bush and voting Obama or know better than to get into a political debate with me.

21. My response to the "Obama is a Muslim" emails
The email came to me from a friend in Schuylerville, ny.....that is why I IO used the town in my reply

News Flash.........(1/16/2008 Atlanta, GA) The US Center for disease control (CDC) has issued a health emergency alert for Schuylerville , in Saratoga County. NY

A virulent strain of the Syphilis contagion has been monitored in Schuylerville, NY in Saratoga County, State of NY. This strain has proven to be resistant to all known antibiotics. Residents of Schuylerville are urged to see their doctor immediately and cease sexual relations of any kind immediately if not sooner.

Awareness of the outbreak came from the Department of Homeland Security(DHS) using a new algorithm that monitors and filters email sent to and from the village.

DHS spokesman Richard Cranium was quoted as saying " We could tell by the nonsensical emails coming from the town that something was terribly wrong...as if they had lost their minds and their ability to think coherently and check facts against reality" .

Mr. Cranium also stated " we have traced the infection back to May 2006 when as the AP reported "McCain, R-Ariz., headlined a $150-a-plate fundraiser luncheon for Congessman John Sweeney. Some in the crowd of roughly 100 paid $1,000 for a private meeting with the senator, a potential 2008 presidential candidate". Mr. Cranium continued by saying " it's those $1000 donors with private access that really need to be tested".....we need to look at those that paid extra".

Town officials had no comment other than saying a CDC mobile testing van would visit the town soon and that free testing would be available soon to those with healthcare insurance. those without insurance are urged to die peacefully and quietly. Veterans must report to nearest VA Hospital for testing and the local Democrats have volunteered to check the tire pressure on any house in the outlying areas and change a tire if necessary.
