3. It's much less needed in baseball than other sports.
It's a gimmick, just like every other thing introduced during Bud Selig's disastrous reign.

9. Yes, "Bud Selig's disastrous reign."
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 12:25 AM by Occam Bandage
Never mind that attendance, revenue, ratings, and profits are all at all-time highs and trending up. Never mind that interleague play, the DH, and especially the wild card / divisional playoffs have been enormously popular among the general fanbase. Bud Selig is disastrous because, er...well, he looks like a dork. And purists are angry at his wildly successful changes to the sport.

Selig fucked up with his blind-eye stance on PEDs, his contraction idea was dumb as hell, and he's pissed off a lot of purists, but baseball is in better shape now than it's ever been in. And a lot of that is Bud's doing.

11. Baseball is quite popular right now. So is American Idol.
Selig is a clown who has relied on an endless series of gimmicks to cover up for inept leadership.

Instant replay is just another.

20. Baseball is a constantly-refined business. If you want to see "pure" baseball played,
without the newfangled gimmicks of the DH, the wild card, the ground-rule double, the tightly-bound "live" ball, the concept of the "foul ball", non-cotton uniforms, overhand pitching, and leather gloves, perhaps you should try a vintage baseball league.

of what is good for baseball is the polar opposite of what fandom at large enjoys.

Edit: I just noticed that an expansion-team fan is complaining about the game changing. Too precious.

I'm complaining about the stupid changes Bud Selig has brought to the game.

And you're being exceedingly dickish so I'm done with you.

34. I like the wild card. I like interleague play. I like that the White Sox
have more money to play with than ever before.

Apparently bashing things you like, for the sake of 'sticking it to the man,' is now a progressive virtue.

8. An instant-replay call on a disputed home run ball is not going to be any slower than
the current circus of managers walking out, talking to various umpires, umpires conferring, managers complaining, etc., etc.

If they want to affect game speed, they need to hold pitchers to strict 15-second pitch timers.

14. But that doesn't mean it won't be used for every call.
That's what will slow the game down even more.

17. ...why do people automatically assume that everyone else is even dumber than they are?
First, instant replay as proposed by MLB is limited only to contested home run calls.

Second, if it were to expand to close safe/out calls (which nobody in MLB has yet proposed), it seems pretty obvious that it would come with strict limitations of use; the NFL implemented instant replay rather smoothly by limiting the number of allowable replays, and by punishing misuse by penalties.

I'm not sure why people assume that MLB is incapable of seeing and addressing problems that would be obvious to a five-year-old.

21. ...why would it? The current system of appeal consists of managers walking on field,
umpires walking around and conferring, managers disagreeing with the call, arguments, and ejections. You're telling me that you really believe that a call to the replay booth perhaps once a game would slow down the sport? I'd think if you were really worried about the speed of the game, you'd direct your anger at umpires allowing pitchers to take 30 seconds between pitches.

24. I prefer college basketball or hockey at any level.
Hell, even soccer is more exciting!

Baseball is glacially slow whether umpires and managers scream at each other for the five minutes between every pitch or not.

Add replays to the shouting matches and baseball may as well become a combination of golf and opera.

Give me a fast-paced basketball game and I'm happy.

And the blind umpires should be forced to watch the replays on a big-screen monitor, so they can see how badly they call these games.

10. YES!!!!!
I am a fan of a team that gets wayyyyyyyy too many fucked-up calls (see 2005 ALCS game 2, 2007 ALDS game 1, and a whole shitload of others) so I think instant replay would be a great thing. Not just on home run calls, but on fan interference as well.

12. Yes.
But add this:
A laser sensor grid aligned with each hitters strike zone, always at the edges of the plate but shifting vertically. Let the home plate ump believe he's in charge of it.

Umpires are players themselves. But then I'm a traditionalist and I don't like designated hitters or interleague play. What's next? Scanning machines calling balls and strikes?
