India - earliest monsoon in 108 years

The monsoon rainfall has hit the Indian capital of New Delhi with rainfall. It is the earliest monsoon to arrive in Delhi in 108 years as it comes a record 14 days ahead of its normal date of June 29. Available weather records in Delhi date back to 1901 and not once has monsoon hit the city before June 16. The minimum temperature recorded Sunday morning was 27.5 degree Celsius, two notches below normal while the maximum temperature hovered around at 33 degree Celsius, four degrees below normal. The maximum temperature settled at 33 degrees Celsius Saturday. The weatherman described it as pre-monsoon showers and forecast a generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rains or thunderstorm in the coming days. Heavy rains are also expected in some areas.

Officials said 15 people, including seven women, were buried alive by landslides triggered by heavy overnight rain in Arunachal Pradesh state early on Sunday. "So far 15 bodies have been recovered and we are getting more reports of fresh landslides from far flung areas," Bidol Tayeng, a senior government official, said from Itanagar, capital of the mountainous state bordering China. Several vehicles were also washed away by huge mudslides in and around Itanagar, officials said. Roads have been blocked by falling debris, hampering movement of rescue workers, they added.

Japan - another quake caused cracked dam

Water from a dam in quake-hit northern Japan has started to leak, forcing rescue workers to abandon efforts to pull out a man trapped in a landslide, a military official said on Sunday. The official said there were about 30 homes near the dam. Local authorities, though, had yet to urge people in nearby Kurihara city to evacuate.

China - floods that killed six people and forced the evacuation of 150,000 residents

Heavy rains in southern China triggered floods that killed six people and forced the evacuation of 150,000 residents, state media reported Saturday. About 100,000 people were evacuated from Lechang city in Guangdong province after heavy rains late Friday pushed up the water level of the Wujiang River, setting off a flood alert. Four people were killed in the city of Shenzhen and two others in Shaoguan, it said. Four others were missing in Heyuan, Qingyuan and Shaoguan. Provincial disaster officials said up to 10.6 inches of rain fell over a 12-hour period starting at 7 p.m. Friday, flooding cities throughout Guangdong. Shenzhen officials reported that more than 300 locations in the city were submerged and reservoirs had to open sluices to lower their water levels.

- flooding closes schools

In Guangxi province, more than 50,000 residents were displaced after rainstorms pummeled Liuzhou city starting Thursday. Nearly 800,000 people in the city were affected by floods and about 100 elementary and middle schools had to suspend classes.

3. 2 things. k&r for people in disasters, and everywhere has issues.
"people the world over should evaluate the topography for where they live and plan accordingly."

True, people need to take into account that wherever they live there is potential for disaster and plan accordingly. For those who read this, make sure you have a disaster kit at home, in your car if you have one, at work or wherever you spend an amount of time since something can happen anywhere and you will be on your own for a while.
