50. Re: Destruction -- Has the Secret Service trampled the Royal Rose Garden again?
IIRC, the last time Bush visited, the Buckingham Palace flower beds got rude treatment from the US Praetorian Guard. The Queen was not amused. Has all been forgiven?

61. It's like being color blind = not something that can be directly learned.
You can learn to manipulae the symbols for ________________, but there will always be all kinds of shades and nuance that will be missing and then comes a day when all of that missing stuff adds up to a yes vote on something like the IWR . . . actually, that's not the best example, because I think what is missing is significant waaaaaayyyyyy more often than "something like the IWR" implies.

This is why we MUST have campaign finance reform.

68. The problem is how meaning & significance are associated with sturm und drang = their Death Cult
Not limited to literal death, but includes also the suicide of all things "not significant" in one's self and others, things such as: art and creativity, the unusual, alternative life-styles and sexuality - anything that "controverts" the sacrifices "we" have already made or in any way makes anyone doubt the worth of what I denied myself in the name of "security", in short anything that is FREE.

63. I'm certain that Queen Elizabeth II despises George W. Bush.
I'm absolutely certain of it. She has lived her life with discipline, focused on what she perceives as her duty. We may or may not agree that it's an important role, but it's the role she inherited and by all accounts she's lived up to it in every possible way.

George W. Bush? The opposite in every way. No discipline, no sense of duty, nothing but pure greed.

48. No, it's not Katrina all over again, as much as many would like to paint it that way.
If anybody has links that show massive fuck-ups by FEMA during this flooding, then let's see them. I live in SW Wisconsin and FEMA did a good job with the flooding 10 months ago and according to our Governor Doyle, a Democrat, they are doing a good job now too. I know this doesn't fit the cookie-cutter portrayal that we have of all things Republican, but I am guessing that a good many FEMA people are not necessarily Republicans.

As far as Bush goes, if I was in flooded areas I would not want him or any of his close cronies anywhere near me. Actions speak louder than words anyway.

106. we'll see how FEMA does in the aftermath of these floods
and trust me, as much as I want to hear your words, I'm going to watch them like a hawk to see just how they do respond. The waters haven't gone down enough in Cedar Rapids yet for them to really get in there and so far I've heard that they've got water on the way, etc. But no field offices up yet, waiting for some sort of approval or whatever.

You're right though, the farther Bush stays away from disasters, the better.

111. I think FEMA's main work here in Wisconsin has come in the aftermath of flooding.
Locally, people were able to take care of the flooding problems as they happened since they were much more familiar with the lay of the land and the local situation. FEMA has come in to examine the damage in order to get the affected areas declared federal disaster area. As I recall, last summer deadlines to file for help were pushed back several times to make sure anybody who needed help got it. I think most people were satisfied with the FEMA help.

The bottom line is that for us in Wisconsin this was in no way like Katrina and in no way like New Orleans. The mostly small and rural areas in Wisconsin that suffered flood damage are demographically and socio-economically far different than New Orleans. People did not have to live in trailers after last year's flooding and they will not this year either. They have the wherewithal, the ability, and the desire to help their neighbors in distress in the short term when the need is most immediate. In the long run people will look to places like FEMA for more financial help to get them back on their feet.

Not to do with flooding, but there was an interesting incident here recently. We have all heard about how the Amish help one another when in need for things like barn raising. Last winter a local non-Amish farmer lost his barn and much of his dairy herd in a fire. This spring the Amish got their people together to help to raise a new barn for him. When they were asked why they did it, their answer was, "That is what you do for neighbors". That is what it is like here and I am sure that Iowa is similar.

134. I'm from La Crosse and have lived here over 50 years.
Gays Mills did get a lot of flooding and there is talk about moving businesses like they did in Soldiers Grove to higher ground (remember they moved it after the '78 flood and it became a solar village--way ahead of its time). They have raised thousands of dollars here in La Crosse this past week to help the flood victims. The same thing happened about 10 months ago.

dams, highways, electrical grids etc. This should be part of national security...they spy on American use of libraries and internet but some of the most critical infrastructure they ignore.

Nothing will be done until we have a Democratic President.

Iowa a DROWNING FOR FOUR DAYS, and bush is having TEA with the QUEEN!

And its corrolary: "Remember the LAST TIME he was AWOL like that? And who he was enjoying birthday cake with?"

(Cue photo of bush with john mcsame)

Kanye West said, back then, that "george bush doesn't care about black people." Well, he evidently doesn't give much of a crap for white people, either.

BTW - the real reason bush is having tea with the Queen is because he knows he soon won't be able to travel in style like this anymore - on the taxpayers' tab. So he's getting all his final globetrotting fun in during the warm months when it's most comfortable to go traveling.

FUCKER.

103. Well, that's the problem right there . . .
Creating your own reality and your OWN way of doing things never EVER means you "LEARN" from mistakes. In your own reality, you don't MAKE mistakes. Everything you do in a created reality means never having to admit error, no accountability and no remorse.

And when all of these assholes are praised by historians, hired for multiple thousand-dollar speaking engagements and million-dollar advance book deals, they'll be laughing in lounges at how they got away with murdering close to a million people, scandal after scandal, a wholesale looting of the treasury and the destruction of democracy . . . all without a PEEP or a rock from the peasantry.

51. a song of the times:
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 12:58 PM by dana_b
written for the victims of Katrina but appropriate for those in the Midwest now:

"Wide Awake"

You can a look a hurricane right in the eye.
1200 people dead or left to die.
Follow the leaders, were it an eye for an eye we'd all be blind.
Deaf or murdered, and this I'm sure in this uncertain time.

So come pull the sheet over my eyes
So I can sleep tonight
Despite what I've seen today.
I found you guilty of a crime, of sleeping at a time
When you should have been wide awake.

Down on the road the world is floating by.
The poor and undefended left behind.
While you're somewhere trading lives for oil,
As if the whole world were blind, hey.

So come pull the sheet over my eyes
So I can sleep tonight
Despite what I've seen today.
I found you guilty of a crime of sleeping at a time
When you should have been wide awake.

Come pull the sheet over my eyes
So I can sleep tonight
Despite what I've seen today
I found you guilty of a crime of sleeping at a time
When you should have been wide awake
Wide awake! Wide awake! Wide awake! Wide awake!

Having mrbush be in Iowa would slow down anything going on as they'd have to spend time, people "securing" the area. Keep him in Urp and let the people in IA do what they need to do. Send home the National Guard. Give FEMA back the ability to actually coordinate assistance. But keep mrbush away.

If Chucklenuts and/or Company showed up, all it would accomplish would be to tie up the remaining roads and get in the way of everyone trying to get something done. I think the people of Cedar Falls and Iowa City are, believe it or not, much better off with His Chimpancy far away, having tea and crumpets with the Queen.

They just want him to RELEASE the workers, aid money, supplies and equipment that FEMA supposedly has.

I'm sure there are PLENTY of people WAITING for his order.

A photo op WOULD be detrimental (as we've seen during Katrina), but all they REALLY need is his signature on some ORDERS.

Presidential elections, you would think they would have been willing to move heaven and earth to make things happen here, but I guess that proves one of two things. One, they're in control of the voting machines and "real votes" don't count; or two, they're already planning on throwing in the towel for 2008!

133. No its not.
Its a terrible situation, yes. But equating it to Katrina is ridiculous and merely diminishes the horror of Katrina. The death tolls are not even remotely comparable and most of the deaths in the midwest are not people trapped in their homes and drwoning as was the case in Katrina, but from wind-related accidents (trees blowing onto cars and homes, trailers being upended, or from people trying to drive through flood waters).
