Iowa Flood coverage

For those who are interested

Authorities are establishing check points in neighborhoods to let limited numbers of people back into their homes briefly...

Still very dangerous

1. Seems half of Iowa is or was underwater.
This is even worse than the 1993 flood in Des Moines.

2. the river is 13 ft. higher than the '93 floods!
which were about 19 ft and this time the Cedar River crested at nearly 32 ft. yesterday. It was 20 ft. in 1851 so this really is looking like another Katrina in many ways.

As you can see on the graph, it's not going to get to workable levels until about next Friday or so.

4. Next Friday? Wow!
Yes, like flooding after a hurricane in many ways. CR already has closed 1 hospital (Mercy). I used to live in CR too.

9. The U of I School Of Music is totally gone.
A friend of mine who's in the DME program there said it's all ruined by the flood.

5. City Council member of Cedar Rapids
on the phone now

asking for people there to be patient about getting back to their homes

(earlier they reported folks were getting really upset in some neighborhoods)

no fewer than 50 manhole covers have been blown off in the area

still very, very dangerous
