Elian 'joins Cuba's communists'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7455748.stm

Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban boy at the centre of an international custody battle eight years ago, has reportedly joined Cuba's Young Communist Union.

He was quoted by Communist youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde as saying he will never let down ex-President Fidel Castro and his brother Raul.

Elian, now 14, was six when relatives in Miami lost their battle to keep him in the US.

He was returned to Cuba in mid-2000 with his father.

Juventud Rebelde said in its Sunday edition the boy was among 18,000 people who joined the Young Communist Union on Saturday.

4. Yep. Rampant commercialism as a dominant value makes me proud to be an American.

17. Thanks.
Why not lift the embargo so someone CAN offer him an ipod? Its not like Castro is the primary reason he can't have one.

18. But but...

How can you be for the spread of rampant American commercialism?? Gasp. I thought you were nobler than that.

19. I'm sorry I've let you and all my other impressionable followers down
:)
Does it make it better that I think all publicly traded companies should be mandated to be majority owned by its employees?

5. History might have been very different if the Clinton Adm. had kept the boy here
Yes, one boy would have been separated from his father. One boy.

But...

Then Gore gets enough Cuban votes (while still losing the overall Cuban vote) to win Florida by enough of a margin that it's not close enough for Bush to steal. Gore is president.

That means no war in Iraq, no tax cuts for the rich, no Katrina fuckup, Osama bin Laden would have been caught at Tora Bora, no No Child Left Behind, no bankruptcy bill, no giveaway drug bill to the drug companies and maybe the August 6th memo is taken seriously enough that 9/11 does not happen.

I think keeping Elian here away from his father would have been a price worth paying to make all of those things happen.

10. And I wouldn't have had to read your mind-bogglingly stupid post.
Almost worth it, but I still think Elian is better off with his father, despite the thirty seconds I just wasted.

12. Elian would have been a gangbanger by now
following in the footsteps of his American cousins whose main occupation was robbing tourists.

13. Blueguy, you know I love you
but that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Plus, what right did the Clinton admin have in helping to kidnap that boy?

9. How unAmerican of him. He could'a enjoyed the Murkin Dream if he'd stayed.
And, enjoyed the pleasures of being another rat in the rat-race.

15. Makes sense considering how Clinton and Janet Reno traumatized him.

It says a lot about him that he isn't into armed conflict.

20. what are you talking about?
if anyone tramatized that boy, it was the Miami relatives.

Their actions, and theirs alone, led to the finale.

23. The cops boke down the door when his cousins refused a court order to return him to his dad.
In a less charitable country, we'd call that kidnapping.

Do you really want to live in a country where the law isn't enforced? If not, what's your complaint with the Bushes?

26. they were violating the law and keeping him from his father
they were given the chance many times to return Elian themselves and forced them to go into their homes like that by continually violating the law.

22. Dear Republicans: thanks for making this poor kid into a propaganda pawn
Nice to see the results of your "family values" on display.

Dear Cuba,

Quit using this kid!

Dear God,

Can we please start having historical events once again where there's one party that is discernibly the "good guys"?

29. Why can't the kid figure out
what he wants to believe in, and what he wants to do and what groups he wants to join by himself?

So many people on this thread are saying he should do this or do that.

He's only 14. Let him figure it out for himself without all the critics.
