I Liked Russert - Maybe I'm A Republican?
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 07:54 PM by MannyGoldstein
I really liked Tim Russert, and will miss him. I was pretty annoyed by his softball treatment of Bush on MTP in 2004 or so, but otherwise thought that he did a good job. And he really, really enjoyed his job - don't see that too often there days. Hard to believe we won't see him again.

I also like Chris Matthews, Maureen Dowd, and Frank Rich.

I feel like I'm part of a distinct minority at DU...

1. I like those folks, Manny
Along with Dan Abrams and Rachel Maddow.

They do their best and work hard, while we have no idea what kind of pressure they face from their bosses.

2. I'm your neighbor in that minority neighborhood -
at least as far as Russert, Tweety and Frank Rich. I run hot and cold on Dowd.

We're not alone.

I will really miss TR, too. I have a feeling I'll be watching the upcoming elections and thinking "it doesn't seem right without Tim Russert.". :(

3. I liked him, too.
He seemed like a genuinely good person. And I also enjoyed the enthusiasm that he displayed. He did seem truly happy doing what he did.

5. Can I be in your club?
I like Keith Olbermann, too, although I'm starting to think he's more entertainment than news these days.

7. You filthy scumbag.
:sarcasm: ...I also liked his show...maybe it was just the format, after all I like Real Time with Bill Mahr but I really don't like Bill.

8. Hear hear. Don't let the very vocal vitriolic few make you question your own taste...and humanity.
We will miss him. The world of political journalism has lost a rare objective voice, and a good man.

Naysaying grave dancers be damned!

9. Well that group did as much as anyone on FOX News to enable Bush to power.
I don't believe you have to be a Republican to like them, they're good at presenting Trojan Horses.

10. Welcome to the distinct minority - I generally agree with you
I'll miss watching Russert - I usually respected his opinion even though I might not always agree. I also believe it is possible to respectively disagree on some issues which also isn't necessarily common on DU.

12. I'm with you - and neither of us are Republicans. Just decent human beings who don't have the silly
notion in our heads that just because someone doesn't agree with us about everything, they should be reviled after their deaths for anything we can dream up (true or not) on an internet discussion board.

(P.S. - I also like Matthews, Dowd, & Rich :hide:)

17. What---I'm not a decent human being if I think the guy was a corporate hack?
You saying that you like Dowd is telling in itself...

19. So, why can't we have people agreeing with us in the MSM at least half the time?
If I ever saw that in the MSM, disagreeing with them the other half of the time would be fine.

15. Doubtful
I doubt one single thing would make it so, but only you can say for sure. I doubt you are in the minority here, most people seem to be moderate. I can never forgive Tim for cheerleading the Kenneth Starr witch hunt. That being said, he was in a very powerful place at a very important time.

He could have done better.

RUSSERT: It’s quite striking, Matt. Not only telling the truth but whether he has the morality and integrity, whether he’s a role model for children...They’ve said his effectiveness as president should be separated from his moral behavior.

But it’s not clear that “they” had said that at all. First of all, if 60% think Clinton has not told the whole truth, and 65% think that Clinton can still lead, then as few as 25% may hold both beliefs. (We trust you to work out the math.) Lauer and Russert speak as if the “vast majority” of people are saying both things; this is plainly not shown by the data. (More on this “overlap” problem in today’s “Smile-a-while,” 9/25/98.) And what is so surprising about the fact that the data do show--the fact that some people think Clinton has not “told the whole truth,” but still “believe he can lead?” Here’s what Richard Berke writes in a New York Times article on reactions to the Clinton testimony--an article distinct from Russert’s commentary in that its deductions are careful and measured:

BERKE: Six out of 10 people who watched Mr. Clinton’s testimony said he mostly tried to avoid answering the questions. But, by the same margin, Americans who watched said it was appropriate for him to refuse to answer questions about his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

Too much loving of Bush and hating Bill for my taste.

RIP Tim.

16. I liked him too
For the most part, I thought he was fair. I always made a point to watch Meet the Press on Sunday mornings and will miss him on that show.

18. Thanks so much Manny - I am with you - I will miss Tim a lot!
It was his middle class Buffalo NY upbringing that I was so fond of. He made it from the ground up. He wasn't perfect - but who the H is? Always enjoyed him on Primary and Election nights. It won't be the same without him.

I would like to see Chuck Todd take over Meet the Press with Rachel Maddow as a co-host - or they could alternate.
