Chocolate lovers rejoice:Synthetic Cocoa Chemical Slows Growth Of Tumors In Human Cell Lines
A synthetic chemical based on a compound found in cocoa beans slowed growth and accelerated destruction of human tumors in laboratory studies, and should be tested further for cancer chemoprevention or even treatment, say researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center.
We have all heard that eating chocolate is good for you; this study suggests one reason why that might be true," says the study's lead author Min Kim, Ph.D., a research scientist in the Department of Oncology at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Published online today in Cell Cycle, the researchers describe how four different human tumor cells lines out of 16 tested were sensitive to the chemical, known as GECGC. The strongest response was seen in two different colon cancers; growth was cut in half and most of the tumor cells were damaged.

Now while it looks like its a synthesized purified chemical from chocolate that actually fights the tumors...It seems that perhaps we can add to "an apple a day keeps the doctor away".."a piece of chocolate a day may keep cancer away"!:)

Marijuana May Stall Brain Tumor Growth
Active Ingredient in Marijuana Inhibits Cancer Growth in Early Study

Aug. 15, 2004 -- The active ingredient in marijuana may help fight brain tumors, a new study suggests.

Researchers say the cannabinoids found in marijuana may aid in brain tumor treatment by targeting the genes needed for the tumors to sprout blood vessels and grow.

Their study showed that cannabinoids inhibited genes needed for the production of vascular growth factor (VEGF) in laboratory mice with glioma brain tumors and two patients with late-stage glioblastoma multiforme, a form of brain cancer.

VEGF is a protein that stimulates blood vessels to grow. Tumors need an abundant blood supply because they generally grow rapidly. So when VEGF is blocked, tumors starve from lack of blood supply and nutrients.

Blocking of VEGF constitutes one of the most promising tumor-fighting approaches currently available, says researcher Manuel Guzman, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, at the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain, in a news release.

4. I KNEW there was a good reason to pick up that 2 lb bag of Ghirardelli
chocolate chips a couple of weeks ago, which is dwindling nightly as I raid them for a snack. I don't know if any will make into cookies, which is why I bought them (theoretically).

8. Hey, I just picked up a bottle of Two-buck Chuck cab at TJ's,
which I portion out into 6 or 7 servings by using my lovely Waterford claret wine glass. So this could definitely work. Can I deduct the wine and chocolate as medical expenses??

(only trouble I can see is that 16 chips per serving thing - ONLY SIXTEEN?????)
