Tonight at 5:01...
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 03:51 PM by babylonsister
Tonight at 5:01 PM Pacific Time, California will become only the second state in America to practice full marriage equality. After decades of discrimination and marginalization gays and lesbians will finally be entitled to all the civil benefits of marriage in the State of California.

This California Supreme Courts ruling in support of marriage equality gives us an opportunity to put equality over the top nationwide. While all of us may work on particular issues and have our own political priorities, today is a day all progressives can come together and celebrate.

Let's ring in equality in the most populous state in the union by showing the unity of the progressive movement. Join me and sign this open letter in support of equality to make sure we preserve this hard fought victory.

Sign this open letter to stand for full marriage equality:
http://www.TrueMajority.org/Equality

Signing this is a first step. In the coming months we'll have to fight against hateful constitutional amendments in California and Florida and make a positive case for marriage equality nationwide. We'll deliver this open letter to Governors across the country in states that are currently considering referendums or legislation regarding marriage equality.

And, regardless of where you are at 5:01 PM pacific time - work, the dinner table, driving - take five minutes and talk to someone you know about why you support marriage equality. After all, that's how change happens, neighbor to neighbor, co-worker to co-worker, citizen to citizen.

3. In the law game,
we say that laws in this country move from left to right. From the West Coast to the East. Of course, Masschusetts pretty much put that canard to rest, but, hey, everyone expected Massachusetts to do something giddy like give gays basic human rights.

But, California? This is HUGH!!!111!1! And that's why I think the floodgates have given way. Finally.

I was privileged to be Best Person at a wedding in Gloucester, MA a few years ago when my best friend married his lover of thirty years. They're the most happily married couple I know, and, of course, they live in Italy.

4. And a few years down the road, when the sky has not fallen
and heterosexual marriages are still being performed in California, perhaps the rest of the country will finally extend civil rights to all of us.

The greatest ally of progress is time.

5. There will be a great disturbance in the Force.
We'll have to ask the RW religious nuts how many heterosexual marriages suddenly fell apart at 5:01pm PDT.
