Today is a historic day for both straights and gays
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 07:31 PM by ruggerson
Marriage equality is a milestone for our country. The history books will show that it started in Massachusetts, as did the American Revolution itself, spread to the most populous and most forward looking nation in the country and then became a freedom and justice tidal wave of unstoppable proportions.

The two founders of the legendary US human rights activist organization, "Daughters of Bilitis," Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, have been together for 56 years and they are being married tonight by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

"Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin fell in love at a time when lesbians risked being arrested, fired from their jobs and sent to electroshock treatment. On Monday afternoon, more than a half-century after they became a couple, Lyon, 84, and Martin, 87, plan to become the first same-sex couple to legally exchange marriage vows in San Francisco, and among the first in the state.
"It was something you wanted to know, 'Is it really going to happen?' And now it's happened, and maybe it can continue to happen," Lyon said.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom plans to officiate at the private ceremony in his City Hall office before 50 invited guests."

2. It is about time
Congrats to all of you who are now free to marry. Let's hope the states in between Massachusetts and California follow suit.

I feel like crying. I guess it's because of all the weddings!

11. I can think of many
that would be surprised and overjoyed. You're right, this is a triumph for them, too.

5. Congratulations to Phyllis and Del, now legally married (again)!
They were married just after 5pm in the office of Mayor Gavin Newsom. It's wonderful to see them honored by the community in this way for their decades of work for lesbian/gay rights!
